The author's chief aim in writing this book has been to provide the reader with a comprehensive coverage of contemporary psychology in such a way that he will be able to relate it to his own experience. In this revision, particularly, the authors have tried to emphasize the scientific basis for psychology as well as the relevance of the discipline to the reader's life. These perspectives are essential to a thorough understanding of the subject.
The authors have described the methods and findings which characterize scientific psychology, including recent developments in such areas as behaviour modification, attitude formation, sleep and dreams, and the chemical basis of memory. Field research, clinical observations and laboratory experiments receive specific and repeated attention, and these findings are organized in a fashion that best reflects their interrelationships.
