She received a Bachelor's degree from Birmingham Southern College, where she received the B.B. Comer Medal in English, and a Master's degree and a doctorate from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. She has taught at the University of Louisville, the University of Montana, Indiana University (Bloomington), Vermont College, and the University of Montevallo. She has written several books including The Disobedience of Water, Ahab's Wife, Four Spirits, Abundance: A Novel of Marie Antoinette, and Adam and Eve. She has won numerous awards including the Harper Lee Award, the Hall-Waters Southern Prize, the Southeastern Library Association Award, and the Alabama Library Association Award.  River Styx: Sena Jeter Naslund and Jason Sommer Tavern of Fine Arts Sena Jeter Naslund is a co-founder and program director of the Spalding University brief-residency MFA in Writing, where she edits The Louisville Review and Fleur-de-Lis Press. A winner of the Harper Lee Award and the Southeastern Library Association Fiction award, she is the author of eight previous works of fiction, including Ahab's Wife, a finalist for the Orange Prize.
Jason Sommer has written two collections of poetry: Other People’s Troubles, which was a finalist for PEN U.S.A. West’s literary prize for poetry, and Lifting the Stone. He has been recognized with fellowships in Poetry at the Bread Loaf and Sewanee writer’s conferences and a Writer’s Community Residency from the National Writer’s Voice Project of the YMCA. He received his Ph.D. from Saint Louis University.

 Milner Book Club Location: Board Room, 3rd Floor Join fellow readers the last Friday of every month, 12 noon, for our lively discussion about books, movies, culture, current events and anything else that pops up for discussion. Lots of fun and everyone welcome. The Milner Book Club in March will pursue two very different stories: first, Sena Jeter Naslund's Abundance, which takes a story we believe we know (Marie Antoinette's) and restages it in a new light, and second Chris Cleave's Little Bee, a book that actually begs you not to spoil the plot!

 21st Annual Humanities Speaker’s Forum: Sena Jeter Naslund Birmingham, Alabama, native Sena Jeter Naslund is the featured speaker for Northeast Alabama Community College’s twenty-first annual Humanities Speaker’s Forum. Naslund is the author of Ahab's Wife, Four Spirits, and The Fountain of St. James Court. The 2005-2006 Kentucky Poet Laureate, Naslund is a recipient of the Harper Lee Award, the Hall-Waters Southern Prize, the Southeastern Library Association Award, and the Alabama Library Association Award. She has held grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Kentucky Foundation for Women, the Kentucky Arts Council, and the University of Louisville. From HarperCollins: Sena Jeter Naslund is the daughter of a physician father and a musician mother. She grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, with her two older brothers Marvin D. Jeter, an archaeologist and author and John Sims Jeter, a retired engineer and novelist. The Jeter family also lived briefly in Loredo, West Virginia, and Jackson, Louisiana. Naslund attended public schools in Birmingham and graduated from Birmingham Southern College where she received the B.B. Comer Medal in English. She earned a master's degree and a doctorate from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. She served as Kentucky Poet Laureate during 2005–2006, and is currently Writer in Residence and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Louisville.  | |
