Review

Ashley Nemer spins a sweet Irish tale set at Christmastime. Lucy loses her parents in a car accident and returns home to Ireland to take care of her ill grandfather. She meets Bud, a friend of her grandparents’, but it takes Bud a while to convince her to go on a date with him. Once she does, however, he shows her the time of her life and romance quickly blooms.
This short story clocks in at about 30 pages but there was enough emotion and back story for the main characters, plus the heroine’s grandmother, to not leave the reader wondering or wanting more info. The plot is great but this story could use a good edit to fix some grammar mistakes, mostly missing commas, and there were some POV shifts but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book.
I look forward to reading book two, Bud’s Christmas Miracle. (Review to come soon.)
4 Stars.

I'm not sure how or when I acquired this novella on my tbr shelves and was especially intrigued to discover the paperback is autographed by the author.

It is the opening story of a 4-book series. The best part of the opening story is Nadia Maverick going to the local pet store, Paws Pals, to purchase a kitten with her nephews, Leon and Daman, and their shared conversation selecting a name. It's during the shopping excursion that Nadia's reporter instincts kick into overdrive as she witnesses some behavior that appears more sinister than normal between a pet store employee and another person in a back office of the store.

I was immediately disappointed reading the "Dedication" that kindly gives recognition to her "entire group of Beta readers for always being there to give me honest feedback and ensuring my work is of the best quality" but has missing text within the complete sentence. Throughout the book there are multiple grammar errors and continued examples of missing text within sentences that are the opposite of best quality.

Moving on to Chapter One, 2nd paragraph, as Nadia is waking up the reader is told "Her daily paper would be loaded (to her Kindle) and ready for her to read over coffee." However, when she goes down to the kitchen she pulls out a Dr. Pepper from the refrigerator. In Chapter Four, Nadia has hot chocolate from Starbucks courtesy of a coworker/partner Gabe. But as Gabe has shared an office with Nadia for 5 years I think he'd be more inclined to buy her coffee from Starbucks especially when he wanted to savor her reaction to his latest research for a story. In Chapter 15, Nadia finally has a cup of coffee as in the 21 chapters of the book she is otherwise drinking wine.

It's a quick read with a few of the murder scenes equivalent to episodes of Criminal Minds or Dexter including a kidnapping with the individual held in a cage and even after being rescued an attraction to someone that has installed hidden cameras in her apartment. Marketing is targeted to Young Adult and up but it is not a novella series I can recommend.

Maverick Touch is a story about a vacation that Nadia and her sister Annabella decided to take in Houston. Nadia is a reporter and wants to have a relaxing time but also do some work for an article she is writing. They are accompanied by Carlisle Ali, whom Nadia has known for about a year. He introduces Nadia and Annabella to a friend of his Carter and they all proceed to start the vacation with dining and sightseeing. Of course there is bound to be trouble for Nadia and it takes Carlisle and Carter both to protect the sisters from an evil lurking in Houston. There is a serial killer or killers on the loose and they do what they do best. See, these Carlisle and Carter are assassins but they only go after the people who happen to escape justice in a court of law. It is no secret to the sisters that this is what these men do, but it does not seem to bother either of them.
This story was good, the plot at times a bit unbelievable. I think that the author crammed a lot into the 176 pages. I think things happened too quick and had the book been longer it may make the story line a bit more believable I did enjoy the book, however I think it may have been a bit more credible to me had I read the first book, Maverick Touch: The Cat. This is a story that has suspense, romance and a bit of humor and is a very quick read. If you have read other works by this author, I am sure you will enjoy this series.

From simply buying a pet and seeing something suspicious going on in the pet store to a murder and finding love.

Nadia, a newspaper reporter, got herself into some deep trouble this time. She always did like mischief, and she definitely got herself into more than mischief this time. Her co-worker was murdered on one of their investigations, and a man who calls himself Mr. A has drawn Nadia into an online chat room. A chat room that ultimately leads to trouble, a rescue, and a new friend.

MAVERICK TOUCH: THE CAT is a cozy mystery with wonderful characters that you will become attached to. The closeness of Nadia's family was a very touching addition to this murder mystery.

All the techie content was refreshing too. I have never read a book by by Ms. Nemer, but most likely will read her other books.

MAVERICK TOUCH: THE CAT has an easy style, an interesting plot, and above all terrific characters that are quite authentic and ones you would want to know or have for your own family.

If you need a break from a regular, gory mystery, but a mystery that will keep you interested, you won’t want to miss this book. There definitely is some suspense, though, for those who MUST have some action. The ending pages became quite tense.

MAVERICK TOUCH: THE CAT was a quick, fun, sweet read....I actually needed tissues a few times. 4/5

This book was given to me free of charge and without compensation by the author in return for an honest review.
