EVOLUTION OF THE U S ARMY DIVISION 1939-1968 de Virgil Ney
The division first appeared in the United States Army in the American Revolution. European military professionals established the divisional structure, which was refined during and after the French Revolution. The Napoleonic wars saw the infantry division in all armies; the French influence on divisional structure has always been strong. The modern United States Army infantry division dates from World War I. World War II and the Korean War were fought by divisions of about one-half the strength of those of World War I. The division was triangular rather than square. The 'cold war' and the possibility of nuclear conflict forced the drastic reorganization of the US infantry division. Pentomic, or ROCID, ROTAD, and finally ROAD were the new formats.… (més)
