Agnes Nieuwenhuizen was born in Iran in 1939 to Hungarian parents. The family emigrated to Australia in 1949. She became one of the most significant figures in the development of Australian young-adult literature. She worked as a secondary school teacher for over twenty years. In 1991, she mostra'n més established the Youth Literature project at the Victorian Writers' Centre, which eventually evolved into the Centre for Youth Literature at the State Library of Victoria in 1999. She established the first Schools Days at the Melbourne Writers Festival in 1994, leading to the establishment of the festival's Schools Program. She wrote four books on young adult literature, and edited three books. She received the Dromkeen Medal in 1994 for services to Australian children's and young adult literature.
