Where: John Hope Franklin Center 240 Cost: Free and open to the public More Info Description: Nell Irvin Painter, a leading historian of the United States and Edwards Professor of American History Emerita at Princeton University, will discuss her transition from scholar to artist in a conversation with Richard Powell, John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art, Art History & Visual Studies at Duke. This event is jointly hosted by the FHI and the Duke Library's John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture. A prolific and award-winning scholar, her most recent books are The History of White People (2010), Creating Black Americans (2006), and Southern History Across the Color Line (2002). In 2009, she received a BFA degree in painting from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. She is currently an MFA student in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design.
