Connie Palmen

A widow for four years, Dutch author Connie Palmen married a second time in 2009. They had been in a relationship for ten years, from 1999 till 2009. The marriage must have been symbolic, because while the marriage too place on 11 November 2009, Van Mierlo died just four months later, on 11 March 2010.

Logboek van een onbarmhartig jaar is a logbook or journal Connie Palmen kept for a year following Van Mierlo's death. She started the journal 48 days after he passed away.

Several other Dutch writers have written books mourning the death of loved ones, notably Tonio by A.F.Th van der Heijden and Schaduwkind by Thomese, as noted by Palmen. These books are about the loss of children. Still, while those writers were shocked with the loss of their loved ones, the death of Palmen's husband did not come as a surprise.

Sylvia Plath wrote very personal and detailed diaries, which were published in an unabridged edition in 2000 (The unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath, 1950 - 1962. Transcribed from the original manuscripts at Smith College). They are a very impressive document that illustrate both her tremendous talent as a writer, and her doomed life. Prior to the publication of the unabridged edition, censored selection had appeared, edited by her husband, the poet Ted Hughes. It was Hughes who destroyed the final volume of Plath's diaries about their married life together.

The English title of Jij zegt het (nl Your Story, My Story) is more telling than the less explicit original title in Dutch. The novel reads like a fictionalized account of the diaries. It describes the life of Sylvia Plath up to her death by suicide in what seems to be a factual account. However, this version is written from the point of view of Ted Hughes, the man who destroyed her dictionaries, censored publication of the other volumes, and may have driven her to her ultimate act of desperation. Whether Hughes actually had a role in it, or whether he feared he might be framed of having a role in it, are all shrouded in the mysteries left due to the destruction of Plath's final diaries.… (més)

Voornamelijk vrouwen is a collection of essays by the Dutch writer Connie Palmen, about Mostly women. There are 12 essays, ten about women, one about Lola, and one about a masculine author.

Lola? Lola of The Kinks. The essays is about Mara Keisling a transgender activist. The next essay is about Philip Roth, possibly the most misoginistic author.

These choices, actually, like the short essays are less about their portentious subjects than about their author. Only the four last pieces, grouped under the heading The sins of a woman should be regarded as essays, as they are somewhat longer and discuss their subjects in a somewhat wider sense. The first eight essaistic pieces all have personality traits as subtitles that seem to refer more to Palmen than to the female authors she writes about.

Like many of her other books, Voornamelijk vrouwen is another expression of narcissism. The short essays tell us very little about their subject, but all the more about their author.

Yes, een nieuwe Palmen! Hoewel nieuw… De eerste essays verschenen al eens in de Volkskrant en De zonde van de vrouw verscheen eerder als Boekenweekessay (en had ik al gelezen). Het blijft dus wachten op een kakelverse Palmen.

Dat neemt niet weg dat Voornamelijk vrouwen een uitmuntende bundeling is die ons meer informatie verschaft over een aantal fascinerende vrouwen (en 1 man). Vrouwen die door Connie Palmen bewonderd worden en waar ze zichzelf in herkent. Door haar bewondering voor hen neer te schrijven leren wij de persoon Connie Palmen beter kennen. Wat misschien wel het boeiendste is aan deze bundel. Hoewel het ook enorm fijn is om haar blik op enkele van mijn favoriete buitenstaanders/schrijvers te lezen (Woolf, Plath, Laing, Didion).

Ik ben het niet altijd met haar eens maar dat is zij het ook niet altijd met de door haar bewonderde schrijvers. Ze weet me wel altijd helemaal in haar gedachtegang mee te trekken doordat ze zo helder en goed kan schrijven. Intelligent en vlot leesbaar; een zeldzame combinatie. Haar mening is haar mening, ze doet daarin geen toegevingen en dat maakt haar zo origineel en interessant.

Zoals we in Meedogenloos kunnen lezen, zo schrijf ik een datum op de voorflap. Bij boeken van Connie kan ik dat blind doen, hoef ik niet te wachten tot ik eerst een paar pagina’s heb gelezen. Ik ben fan, ik blijf fan, wil elke letter van haar gelezen hebben. Omdat ze mijn brein prikkelt, me anders naar de wereld laat kijken.… (més)
