Michael Pollan is a contributing writer for "The New York Times Magazine" as well as a contributing editor at "Harper's" magazine. He is the author of two prize-winning books: "Second Nature: A Gardener's Education" and "A Place of My Own: The Education of an Amateur Builder." Pollan lives in mostra'n més Connecticut with his wife and son. (Publisher Provided) Michael Pollan was born in 1955 and raised on Long Island, NY. He received his B.A. in English from Bennington College in 1977 and his Masters, also in English, from Columbia University, in 1981. Interesting, but perhaps I’m not the audience. He lays out a very clear argument against people appropriating sacred ritual for frivolous purposes and then proceeds to describe a travesty he attended without a shred of self consciousness. Luckily, this is toward the end .

Pollan follows food from origin to table through four different chains. Industrial/organic, grass fed and hunted/gathered. There is a lot I’d probably rather not know. He gives a fairly balanced look at the philosophical underpinnings of the act of eating

I read a lot of books discussing how plants and bees or other pollinators evolved to fufill each other's needs, but hadn't really though about plants & people.
Enjoyed this one a lot, it explores the human relationship with apples, marijuana, tulips and potatoes

This is the book for all of us fascinated with the world of plants and the strange effect they can have on our minds. It is truly bewildering how some plants and the products we get from them are glorified, while others are demonized. Pollan explores this very arbitrary division through personal anecdotes, a little bit of scientific research and legal peculiarities.
I particularly liked the chapter on mescaline, while the ones on poppies and coffee were interesting as well. A must-read for all fans of Pollan.… (més)
