Jack Hammond is an immortal. Stuck to look like a 20 year old for more than 100 years, Jack has roamed the World without reason, meaning or knowledge or how or why he is the way he is. Since the death of his love, Lydia, Jack has felt that there is nothing to continue for. When Jack lands in Portland, Maine, things begin to change. After bumping into a woman who looks exactly like Lydia and a man who is from too far in the past, Jack gets another chance at love and begins to understand exactly he is.

This is a very interesting paranormal romance story that I had no idea where it was going. For this story, I really appreciated that the majority of the point of view was from Jack’s perspective. Jack was a broken character when the story began and things could hopefully only get better for him. He is also shrouded in so much mystery, that I wanted to keep reading even though the beginning moved slow for me. Things began moving for me when Jack met Leah and began to figure out his connection to her and began to figure out exactly what he is and why. Their romance moved fast, but for good reason and was exceptionally sweet. I was really intrigued by what exactly Jack is, his family history and how the other immortals operate. The ending was very surprising and moved very fast, I couldn’t put it down!

I always talk about books that make an impact, books that sweep the reader away from the get-go and immediately you know you love them, and books that are quieter, ones that you don't know you truly love until you finish them. Sometimes those are the ones I truly adore reading. This book, was one of them.

The sorrow the main character has in this story can be felt throughout the entire book. I sensed his pain and hurt from losing someone he loved dearly all those years ago. I also sensed his desperation for death. Some people think immortality would be an amazing thing, but it is stories like this and characters like Jack which put the truth behind immortality into perspective. Would you want to live your days alone and constantly moving around so people wouldn't suspect when you don't age. I mean, the whole being able to get shot or stabbed or hurt in any way and then healing is pretty awesome, but immortality could be a very lonely life.

And then what happens if you find someone that you begin to love, such as in Jack's case? Even though Leah is a soul immortal, and there is a miniscule chance she could come back in a different time and remember him, contrary to what Jack himself believes, it is not like she can live forever like him. So I could definitely understand, after he figures out how to die, Jack planning to basically kill himself when she dies.

Even now, I am smiling at this story. It was so sad, yet so happy. I felt the love both main characters had for one another, and I loved that Leah was the descendant of Jack's first true love but that he saw her for her true self. He did sometimes compare the two, but he loved Leah for who she was and he was willing to sacrifice himself to save her. I don't think I realized just how much I truly enjoyed this piece until writing this review, but it is very beautiful, AND it sets itself up for a possible sequel! YAY!

This oh so quiet novel was truly a privilege to read.

I almost gave up on MY SOUL IMMORTAL about 20% in but I kept with it. It was not keeping my attention nor was I attached to the characters (which we mainly interacted with Jack at this point). The build up seemed to keep going and going and I just really wanted something to happen already. Thankfully it did get better for me after the 50% mark and by the end I was more invested.

MY SOUL IMMORTAL was pretty heavy on the mystery so I wont get much into the plot to avoid spoilers. I ended up enjoying the characters, especially Leah. I was able to connect to her pretty quickly after she was introduced. She seems to have a lot of faith in herself and Jack and she handled things pretty well. Jack is a pretty complex character. We get to know a little bit about just him in the first part of the book and then get more into the details as the story completes. We are introduced to a few secondary characters and I liked them just fine as well. It feels as though Artagan will have a much bigger role as the series continues.

Although the romance between Jack and Leah is a big part of the book I felt the mystery was just as important. The romance between the two felt real and I enjoyed getting to know their past together as they discovered their future. MY SOUL IMMORTAL ended right after we get some substantial information that makes you want to get a hold of book 2. If I run across the second book I will most likely give it a shot.

Jack Hammond has been around for 170 years. He can’t die. After his true love succumbed to an illness he tried many ways to end his existence and none of them worked. So, every few years he moves around to keep people from being suspicious of his 20-yr-old looking face. However, when a liquor store robbery in LA goes wrong, Jack is shot twice with fatal wounds. He knows he has to skedaddle or face questions he can’t afford to answer without the risk of ending up in a straight jacket or a test laboratory. Ending up in Portland, Maine turns out to be the best move he’s made in his long life though it doesn’t seem so at the time. Who the hell is the mysterious stranger who calls himself Artagan and seems to know all about Jack? Also, running into his long lost love’s doppelganger throws Jack for a loop and he doesn’t know if he’s coming or going. Should he stay away from Leah Winters for his sanity’s sake or is it already too late? Jack has gone from a fairly monotonous life to one that is almost too exciting. Well, we know it won’t kill him. Or will it?

This is quite an interesting take on immortality. I was expecting a new trend on vampires or some kind of new fangled twist on Highlander, but this story goes in a much different direction than I was expecting and it revolves around Artagan.

I have to admit that in the beginning I thought Jack was a bit of a whiner baby. “Oh, my love died and I don’t want to go on without her, but I can’t die, so wtf? I guess I’ll just mope around for 170 years and do nothing with myself.” Ok, I get that it’s different, that Jack hates being an immortal. Not everyone wants to live forever. But 170 years of that crap? Come on, Jack! Pull up your big boy jockeys and do some interesting shit. But don’t worry, dear readers! He does after he meets the mysterious Artagan and Leah, the spitting image of his love Lydia. *That’s* when things get interesting! There is resolution to this story, but the gauntlet for the next book is definitely thrown down. I’m looking forward to seeing where this series is headed!
