This book is a sequel to Mother, I Don’t Forgive You, the journey of one woman to heal her own soul before forgiving her abusive mother. In this sequel, Mother, It’s Hard to Forgive You, Richards writes in gripping, vivid, believable detail about the long term repercussions of childhood abuse on her adult life, namely being labeled as the family scapegoat. This forces her to alienate herself from her family. It is through her sheer determination to heal and live a healthy life that she forges ahead to grieve her losses and reestablish herself in healthy relationships. This eventually helps her to reconnect with her family of origin.

Her writing is engaging and emotionally evocative with a dramatic tension that had me turning the pages and rooting for her. This story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Its message that forgiveness and healing are possible despite childhood abuse offers hope and encouragement to anyone who has suffered abuse. Reading both books also shows how healing and forgiveness slowly evolves in stages.

While it is helpful to read Mother, I Don’t Forgive You first to gain a full understanding of the depth of her abuse, Mother It’s Hard to Forgive You can also be read as a stand alone book.

I highly recommend this memoir for anyone who has been abused and for those who serve the abused population.

In sharing her brave struggle to forgive her mother for the severe abuse she endured as a child, Nancy Richards has provided a thought-provoking and unique perspective on the concept of forgiveness. Though, she was admonished by friends, family, therapists and Christians that she needed to forgive in order to heal, she defied societal expectations and decided to not forgive her mother. Therein lies the story of how she found eventual forgiveness by allowing herself to heal first. She gave herself permission to not forgive her mother.

I have always viewed forgiveness as a noble gesture and one that provides freedom and peace to the person forgiving. But after reading Mother, I Don’t Forgive You, I can understand how concentrating on one’s own healing takes precedence over forgiving.

This was a tough story to read in that the graphic descriptions of childhood abuse are gripping and cringe-worthy. Richards beings us right back there into her world of fear and terror as she and her brother face unthinkable torture at the hands of two stepfathers as their mother stands by and does not intervene. Her writing is vivid and engaging and she helps the reader understand the depth of the trauma. She describes in heart-wrenching detail her desperate attempts to protect her younger brothers while still trying to maintain a relationship with her mother, whom she loves and needs.

Through her long and difficult journey to healing and forgiveness, Richards offers valuable insights into healing from family abuse, mostly “ you have to heal first before you can forgive.” In sharing her story, she has provided a template for others who have suffered childhood abuse at the hands of a family member.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been abused and to providers who serve the abused population.
