For millennia, domesticated animals, including milk cows, working dogs, horses, livestock, and poultry lived in cities. The strict bifurcation between city and rural roles of animals was a product of the 19th century. In Animal City, Andrew Robichaud tracks this change, as trains allowed for delivery of dairy to urban dwellers, as livestock and their slaughter was segregated to defined districts, as dogs became pets, and as societies for the humane treatment of animals became a political and social force. In the end, though, Robichaud concludes that separating the processing of animals for food from everyday life has not benefitted the workers in those industries or the animals we consume on a daily basis.… (més)
