Kathleen Rooney & Peggy Shinner ~ Seminary Co-op Bookstore TUESDAY, APRIL 29TH, 6 PM SEMINARY CO-OP BOOKSTORE 5751 S. WOODLAWN AVENUE PHONE: 773.752.4381 A quarter-life crisis viewed from the ghostly perspective of the Founding Fathers, O, Democracy! is a hilarious and heartbreaking story about American politics and the difficult business of being a good citizen: walking the tricky line between self-sacrifice and self-sabotage, between doing your part and knowing your place.
Kathleen Rooney is a founding editor of Rose Metal Press, a nonprofit publisher of literary work in hybrid genres, as well as a member of Poems While You Wait, a team of poets and their typewriters who compose commissioned poetry on demand. She lives in Chicago where she is a Visiting Assistant Professor at DePaul University.
Turning the category of body books on, well, its ear, You Feel So Mortal offers a probing view of our preoccupation with the body that is both idiosyncratic and universal, leaving us with the deep satisfaction of our shared humanity.
Peggy Shinner is the author of You Feel So Mortal / Essays on the Body (April 2014, University of Chicago Press). Currently, she teaches in the MFA program at Northwestern University. As a trained martial artist, she taught Seido karate for seventeen years. A life-long Chicagoan, she lives there with her partner, designer and book artist Ann Tyler.

Local Author Night: Kathleen Rooney "Robinson Alone", Susan Hahn "Six Granddaughters of Cecil Slaughter", BJ Best "But Our Princess Is In Another Castle", Amy Leach "Things That Are" "Meet Robinson, the protagonist of Kathleen Rooney's brilliant novel-in-poems Robinson Alone. Confured up by Weldon Kees and set loose in an urban landscape, Robinson reflects and refracts mid-century American kitsch, optimism, and despair... Lyrical and detailed, precise and ornate, Rooney's genre-bending text showcases an obsession with literary history." - Carol Guess "It's no surprise Susan Hahn peppers her first novel with poems. The former TriQuarterly editor has authored nine books of poetry and contributed to numerous poetry journals. What’s striking is the intricacy of her prose, chronicling the deep-seated rivalries and sorrows of a family of Jewish Hungarian immigrants who’ve settled in Chicago. The six granddaughters—Celine, Celie, Cecilia, Cecily, Celeste (who died in infancy) and Ceci (who passed away at age 32)—are wildly different but 'cut from the same cloth.' A murder, mentioned in the first sentence of the book and built up to over subsequent chapters, threatens to unravel their lives." - Laura Pearson The color, noise, and often cryptic images of classic video games launch BJ Best's prose poems in But Our Princess Is in Another Castle. And while Mario, Pac-Man, and pioneer families forsaken on the Oregon Trail populate these pixelated landscapes, this book translates the games and plays them in the real world, so an Asteroid becomes just one more star shot with lost love, Space Incaders might have communist sympathies, and God is just as bad at Tetris as you are. Written for gamers and non-gamers alike, the book's levels explore how our past virtual lives can inform our present, actual ones. A series of essays that progress from the tiniest Earth dwellers to far-flung celestial bodies--considering everything from the similarity of gods to donkeys, to the connection of exploding stars and exploding sea cucumbers--to rekindle our communion with the wild world. Concerned at once with realms animal and human, phenomenal and cosmic, the contents expand and confound the reader's senses in delightful ways. Amy Leach's Things That Are never fails to inspire wonder and is a Book Cellar favorite. KATHLEEN ROONEY, LINDSAY HUNTER KATHLEEN ROONEY debat Live Nude Girl: My Life as an Object.; LINDSAY HUNTERLIVE NUDE GIRL is a lively meditation on the profession of nude modeling as practiced in history and today. Rooney draws on her own experiences as an artist’s model and on the stories of famous, notorious, and mysterious artists and models through the ages. Combining personal perspective, historical anecdote, and witty prose, Rooney reveals that both the appeal of posing nude for artists and that of drawing the naked figure lie in our deeply human responses to body, sex, love, and death. Joining her will be Chicago writer Lindsay Hunter, published in McSweeney’s, and the co-founder and co-host of the Quickies! Reading Series. (bookjones)… (més)
