DESCRIPTION:The music critic for The New Yorker will talk about his recent book, an ambitious survey of 20th-century music and its cultural impact that received the 2008 National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism. The book argues that the influence of the big, challenging, and often difficult music we call modern can be felt everywhere: for example, avant-garde sounds populate the soundtracks of Hollywood thrillers; Sibelius can be heard in the keening modes of Coltrane; and minimalist music has profoundly affected rock, pop, and dance music.
