ELYN SAKS: THE CENTER CANNOT HOLD 7pm Elyn Saks was eight years old when her first symptoms of schizophrenia appeared in the form of obsessions and night terrors. But it wasn't until she reached Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar that her first full-blown episode, complete with voices and terrifying suicidal fantasies, forced her into a psychiatric hospital. Tonight Saks, an endowed professor at USC Gould School of Law, visits with her memoir, The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness, which Oliver Sacks calls "the most lucid and hopeful memoir of living with schizophrenia I have ever read." Dr. Saks is visiting the Valley in conjunction with Mental Health America of Arizona's 20th anniversary symposium. (booksense)
