On Thursday, February 5th, at 4 pm, the Library will host a reception for American Studies and History Professor Marni Sandweiss, on the occasion of her new book's publication. Passing Strange: A Gilded Age Tale of Love and Deception Across the Color Line (Penguin Press) tells the story of Clarence King, a 19th century white explorer and geologist who lived a double life as a black Pullman porter and steel worker named James Todd; he kept secret the fact that he was white even from his beloved African-American wife, Ada, until he was on his deathbed. Publishers Weekly, in a starred review, has called the book "a remarkable feat of research and reporting that covers the long century from Civil War to Civil Rights." The reception is free and open to the public, and will feature a brief reading by Professor Sandweiss. Copies of the book will be for sale. (harrinsl)… (més)
