Interesting, if slightly scattershot, book on the history of railways. While it doesn't make any claims to be systemic, it does touch on a number of interesting topics, such as engine design and tunnel design. There's also a wealth of interesting pictures. Dated, of course, but given railroad history, that's not a negative.
