If you're looking for a story that evokes the beauty of the mountains and rivers of Montana along with the hard scrabble towns that dot its' landscape you will find it here, written by an author that has a fierce love of it. But this is more than just a 'regional' piece of fiction. The characters are deeply believable, struggling through difficult situations the best way they can find. My bet is that you will find yourself rooting for them. I sure did.

A great read. So many secrets in this small town. A father struggles to make it at his failing hotel while dealing with his severely autistic daughter. A newspaper man writs a story to save the hotel and the town; it does bring in money, but there is more at stake. A town vet tries to find out some truths but in her search she finds loneliness. A beautiful story that will keep you turning pages. The characters are wonderful, the sense of place in the small town of Rocket is wonderful, the story is wonderful. Many lives will be changed forever during this summer in the town of Rocket, Washington.… (més)

Damaged Goods is the story of Hershel Swift, a previously-selfish auctioneer who is recovering from a car accident that has impaired his memory, and Silvie Thorne, a young woman on the run from an abusive past.

You could call Damaged Goods a crime/suspense/thriller novel. It definately has plenty of crime, including some really inventive murder methods and body disposal schemes. The story line moves along at a pretty fast pace and culminates in a scene worthy of the 'thriller' genre. It is a page-turner.

But Damaged Goods has much more depth than a typical crime novel. The primary characters are so very real, layered with all manner of positive and negative traits and motivations. Some of the secondary characters are equally interesting. Hershel's assistant, Carl, is one of the most interesting supporting characters I've encountered in a crime novel.

Recommended.

Ten-year-old finds a skeleton of a woman on the banks of a river that runs through a small town in Wyoming. Sheriff Kip Edelson then gets the job of finding out who the victim is and what happened to her. Too many characters, not enough character development, and the different story lines never really come together. The descriptive writing about Montana is good but is not enough to make up for the lack of a good story.
