I've long had an interest in Theodore Kaczynski's story, how a man with so much intellect and potential could slide into misanthropy, sabotage and ultimately murder, so when I saw this DVD on the shelf I picked it up without hesitation. It's a difficult movie to watch. The director does a sterling job in making you feel and understand and even empathize with Kaczynski's visceral anger at the environmental degradation occurring around him. At the same time, the director ensures you never develop so much of a sympathy for the man that you are not ultimately repelled by his descent into the insane logic that the only answer is isolation, violence and murder. All this is of course facilitated by a superb performance by Sharlto Copley in the lead role.

At one point in the biopic I was struck by the imagery of the solitary man in the solitary cabin in the woods... and my mind strayed to Thoreau. The difference of course was that Thoreau took a different path, he didn't eschew human company, and his route was non violent resistance. Which at the end of that day explains why a hundred years hence people will still be talking about Thoreau and Walden, whereas Kaczynski and his 'Industrial Society and its Future' will have been lost in obscurity by the passage of time.
