The editor's note explains that the artist, Ori Sherman, died young, and was dying while he worked on the sumptuous, resplendent artwork for this book: the note explains that he chose to work, rather than rest. The Hebrew text is incorporated in the illustrations, except for the missing phrase about God resting from his work on the seventh day ( Vayishbot bayom hashvii micol melachto asher asah). The Slifka Center for Yale Hillel had an exhibit of Sherman's work.

Stephen Mitchell has translated other books of the Bible. He translated the Creation story for children for this book.

What is the primary language of this book? It was created as an English language translation of Hebrew, but all translation is commentary, so this book is more than / different from the same book done completely in Hebrew.

This book is a lovely interpretation of the Judeo-Christian creation story. The pictures are beautiful and help tell teh story. Because this is a book based on the Bible, it probably could not be used in a public school setting, unless it was for a Social Studies class learnign about Christianity, or various creation stories from many cultures. It would be a great book for religious schools, however.
