Ronald D. Siegel, PsyD, is Assistant Professor of Psychology, part time, at Harvard Medical School, where he has taught since the early 1980s. His books include The Mindfulness Solution: Everyday Practices for Everyday Problems. Dr. Siegel teaches internationally about the application of mostra'n més mindfulness practices in psychotherapy and other fields, and maintains a private practice in Lincoln, Massachusetts. These series of lectures seek to bring the fields of psychology and scientific research together with the practices of mindfulness and meditation, and they do so masterfully. These lectures very thoroughly cover the benefits of mindfulness and how meditative practices can be successfully integrated into to science-based mental health therapies.

The lectures also offer individuals ways of developing mindfulness by staying in the moment even while doing routine daily tasks such as driving and walking. Following the lectures, there are guided meditations to help the beginner start out the path of mindfulness.

The audio set covers numerous different aspects of mental health therapies and the benefits that can be achieved through the incorporation of mindfulness practices. I recommend it to anyone seeking a starting place for adding meditation to their daily routine, as well as for those interested in how meditation can enhance science-based mental health therapies.

This is a series of 26 lectures on mindfulness and related topics. I found the lecture on placebo effect to be useful. I am also trying to implement the mindfulness methods discussed to examine the effects on mood, ability to concentrate, and well being. The author appears to be knowledgeable with a preference for input from eastern techniques and thought processes. I felt the information was insightful and potentially useful. I reserve judgment on whether it truly is useful.

I first heard about this book on an episode of Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski (). I didn't want to rush through [b:The Distant Hours|6746018|The Distant Hours|Kate Morton|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1287702015s/6746018.jpg|6942439] so [b:The Mindfulness Solution|7949549|The Mindfulness Solution|Ronald Siegel|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1270183535s/7949549.jpg|11559979] languished a bit while I enjoyed [b:The Distant Hours|6746018|The Distant Hours|Kate Morton|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1287702015s/6746018.jpg|6942439]. As luck would have it, before I got very far, the books was recalled to the Library! So many books, so little time!

Still, I found a few tidbits that I can think about, which I think will expand my horizons a little bit.

The first thing I noticed, in the preface, was the author's ability to say something directly that did not make me think "who does he think he is telling me THAT?" In the preface [a:Ronald Siegel|79270|Ronald K. Siegel|http://www.goodreads.com/images/nophoto/nophoto-U-50x66.jpg] writes "How can one practice possibly help with so many different problems? The answer is that they're all made worse by the same natural tendency: in our effort to feel good, we try to avoid or escape discomfort, only to discover that this in fact multiplies our misery." He goes on to promise that examples in the book will prove his point. In the recesses of my brain, I realized that I was avoiding finishing the back of the
Zig Zaggy quilt, because I had done too much piecing on the back and it was a pain to finish the piecing.… (més)
