Sobre l'autor

The most popular current writer of humorous verse for children, Shel Silverstein was born in Chicago, Illinois, has been married and divorced, has one daughter, and currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. His career includes composing popular songs, drawing cartoons, writing many adult articles mostra'n més (several for Playboy), and acting. However, he is best known for his self-illustrated children's poetry. His first such book was Uncle Shelby's Story of Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back (1963), the humorous tale of a lion who turns the tables on hunters. It was followed by The Giving Tree (1964), a story of a parentlike tree that gives endlessly and is endlessly used by its son. Several other such picture books followed, including The Missing Piece (1976), about a circle that goes in search of a missing piece, and its sequel, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O (1981). However, two collections of poetry are probably his best-loved work: Where the Sidewalk Ends: The Poems and Drawings of Shel Silverstein (1974), and A Light in the Attic (1981). All of Silverstein's poetry for children employs the language play common to Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. Silverstein is probably the best of the contemporary nonsense poets for children. A collection of all different length poems ranging from absolutely nonsense to deep and meaningful. This book was a childhood favorite of mine and my sisters along with his other three and can recite his Knock Knock poem almost word for word. A great book for poetry to show how fun and silly poetry can be while still being engaging and thought provoking. Can be used across many different grade levels and a great addition to any classroom.

This book would be good for primary students. I really liked how it touched on themes of giving, kindness through the friendship of a tree and a boy. Every time the boy needed something, the tree would give a part of itself to the boy throughout his life until he grew old when the only thing the tree could give was its stump as a seat. I think that this is an important book for students to read for them to understand what it means to be generous.

This book would be great for Primary and Intermediate levels.
It is about a child growing up and spending his time by the tree. It goes through different stages of life and societal importances within those stages
This would be helpful for children starting to read because there are not a ton of words on the pages, or could be used at an older age group to expand thinking on life.
