- Doris Buchanan Smith (June 1, 1934 - August 8, 2002) was an American author of award-winning children’s books that were distinguished for their realism. Writing for the School Library Journal, Ann Welton said that Smith's first book, A Taste of Blackberries, 1973, is "Rightfully viewed, along with Katherine Paterson's Bridge to Terabithia, as one of the seminal children's books on the subject of death." A Taste of Blackberries, won the Josette Frank Award, the Georgia Children’s Book Award, and the Children's Best Book Prize in Holland (Zilveren Griffel). Blackberries has been translated into six languages, including Afrikaans, Dutch, Danish, French, Japanese and Spanish. In addition to Blackberries, three of Smith's other works were named ALA Notable Children's Books by the American Library Association; The First Hard Times, 1983, Return to Bitter Creek, 1986, and The Pennywhistle Tree, 1991. In addition to being named an ALA Notable Children's Book, Return to Bitter Creek also won the Parents' Choice Award, and was an SLJ & Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year. Last Was Lloyd, 1981, was named an SLJ Best Book of the Year, and is a companion to The First Hard Times. Smith's last published work was Remember the Red Shouldered Hawk, 1994.
