I was expecting more of a direct primary source description of the appalling combat experience of 1864-65. This uses primary sources, but in a more psychological context that is pretty dry and academic. His point that the trenches in Petersburg ironically offered a chance for increase in morale in comparison to the butchery of the Overland campaign is made effectively, but repetitively. The text reads like a masters thesis that has been padded to expand to the 242 pages of text, with multiple repetitious points being made. It gets annoying after awhile.… (més)
