188. Robert Gordon Cousins, by Jacob A. Swisher (read 16 Apr 1945) On Apr 9, 1945, I said: "Reading a biography of an Iowa representative, Robert G. Cousins, 1893-1909. 16 years he served . He was a standpat Republican and ardent supporter of high tariffs. He was born in 1859, died 1933. He retired from Congress unexpectedly at the age of 49. Famous for his oratory." On April 12 I was reading some of his speeches included in the book when I saw it was after 6 PM so I went to the radio and turned it on. Fulton Lewis, Jr. was talking and I came to realize as I listened that FDR had died. I was devastated and shocked beyond words.… (més)
