With the #WeNeedDiverseBooks campaign in full swing and the call for more diversity in children's publishing louder than ever, please join the SCBWI Hyde Park/South Side Network for a lively discussion around the current state of children's literature. Four amazing Chicago-area authors will discuss writing characters that are underrepresented in children's books, the journey to finding an agent and publisher, how their books are received, the changes they've seen in the industry, and more. Please come support our lovely and talented local authors: Natasha Tarpley: She is the author of Bippity Bop Barbershop, I Love My Hair (both from Little, Brown), and Joe-Joe's First Flight (Knopf), which feature African-American children as central characters, as well as the founder of Voonderbar! Productions, an independent publishing company that produces multicultural books for children of all ages. http://www.natashatarpley.com/Claudia Guadalupe Martinez: Author of the award-winning The Smell of Old Lady Perfume, set in a border town, and this year's Pig Park, set in a "multiethnic Chicago neighborhood" (both from Cinco Puntos). http://www.claudiaguadalupemartinez.com/main/Crystal Chan: Author of Bird, about a girl who belongs to the only mixed-race family in her town and the tragedy that haunts them (Atheneum). http://crystalchanwrites.com/Ami Polonsky: Author of Gracefully Grayson, a story about a boy "stuck in the wrong gender's body" (Disney-Hyperion). http://www.amipolonsky.com
