Biografia breu
When I was a kid, I wanted to be a lot of things when I grew up, but it never occurred to me to be an author. At some point in time, I was going to be a teacher, a judge, a stunt woman, a mom with twelve kids who lived on a farm in the city, or a business woman who wore suits and worked in a glass-windowed high-rise. My ultimate dream was for a job that didn't exist: an all-purpose idea-thinker-upper. (My dream was very specific: cool office with toys and gadgets, a chair that swiveled, and clients who paid me to solve their myriad problems with incredibly creative solutions.)

I've lived my whole life in, or around, Minneapolis, Minnesota. I currently live in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

Writing is my full-time job and I love that I actually did end up being a professional idea-thinker-upper—though just not as I had originally imagined.

In my spare time, I like to read, play on the flying trapeze, travel to warm destinations, watch movies, work-out, and do yoga. I also spend an inordinate amount of time staring out the window. [from: Website, 10/22/2023]

True Stories of Extraordinary Animal Friendships is a wonderful book, and I love it. There are two ways to "read" it. The first is by simply pointing and naming the animals and talking about the two of them and their attributes. The second is through poetry about what friendship is. My favorite part is the large photographs of animals cuddling.

Recommended age: 1-3 years

Writing style: Poetry with some repetition in word choice, like "No matter." Expect to learn about different attributes of animals and their actions to compare and contrast.

Lexile range (unofficial): 610L - 800L
Decoding difficulty: 3/5
Vocabulary difficulty: 5/5
Sentences difficulty: 5/5
Patterns difficulty: 4/5

Illustration style: One page contains colored text on a white background, while the other is a full-page photograph of two animals that are unlikely friends, such as a pig and a lion.

Reality-based? Yes. The book contains real photographs of animals.

Reviewed for VPRC. Great book looking at 15 women in history who invented or discovered something extraordinary that changed the lives of people across the world. From turning plastic into fuel to inventing Scotchguard to protect fabric, this is a fascinating look at how these women saw a need for something to plug a gap and they persevered until they found a solution to fill the hole!
Short paragraphs with brightly coloured quotes and illustrations.

A nice book that shows how human intervention has lead to the panda population becoming endangered and how efforts are being taken to reverse this. It tells of activist in china's efforts to teach panda cubs raised in captivity how to live in the wild. This is good to teach kids the reasons why the panda is endangered.
