This is book 3 of the Det Margaret Nolan series. Each book appears to have the same characters that can get confusing at times. The series actually has two main characters as Sam Easton plays a central role in the first two books as well. The LAPD detectives get called to the scene when a dead body of actor Evans Hobbes is discovered. They need to determine if it was accident or if someone killed him. This continues the complex story murder and mystery with likeable interesting characters.

LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan struggles after the death of her brother Max in Afghanistan. Sam Easton continues to be a character in this book series. There are many of the same characters in the books and could be read as a stand alone novel.

Detective Nolan's mother Emily tells her she will be going on a retreat to help her grief the loss of Max. The name of the retreat center, Children of the Desert, is a topic of discussion for many. Sam is asked by a friend to help rescue a woman and her daughter who fled the compound in Desolation Canyon in the middle of the desert. Nolan discovers that the Children of the Desert is a religious cult and desperately seeks to save her mother who unknowingly went there for respite. The story is complex with ties to the Russian mafia using the retreat center for their illegal smuggling activities.… (més)

“Unlike any other species on the planet, humans possessed the vexing capacity to dwell in the past or speculate about the future, which sometimes made life unreasonably difficult.”

Sam Easton still has nightmares of his time in Afghanistan after his wife, Yukiko, left him. He struggles daily with the support of therapy and his mother, Vivian Easton. Detective Margaret Nolan arrives at the scene of a murder with her experienced partner and things aren't looking well for Sam. Although Detective Nolan sympathizes with him as she recently lost her brother in Afghanistan, she still needs to stay focused on the evidence. He is a likeable character who because of his PTSD and blackouts finds himself in questionable situations like the suspect of a gruesome murder. Since Detective Nolan doesn't plan a big part of this novel I can only guess this sets the stage for the book series.… (més)

Although I had previously read the first book in this series, I opted to start with the third installment and now plan to go back and read the second as well. The author skillfully delves into the thoughts of both major and minor characters, making even the most fleeting appearances feel fully developed. However, the sheer number of characters can make it overwhelming to keep track of all the information presented.

Although the series is named after Detective Nolan, she shares the lead role with Sam, a wounded veteran whom Margaret befriended in a previous book. The portrayal of Hollywood elites is scathing, depicting them as snobbish, cunning, and treacherous, while some can be endearing, and others deadly. The working-class law enforcement types, especially Margaret's partner Detective Crawford, are much easier to relate to.

The story begins with a murder and quickly escalates as more bodies pile up. The detectives investigate, uncovering a tangled web of suspects that grows more complex with each revelation. While the initial character building can make the beginning feel slow, once Margaret begins to solve the crime, the story becomes engaging. Keeping track of all the suspects may require taking notes.

This book is the third in a series featuring Detective Margaret Nolan of the Los Angeles Police Department. The opening chapter is gripping, featuring murder, investigation, and personal lives of the characters. While the secondary characters are well-developed, readers may find it easier to follow if they have read the previous books. The intricate plot includes several subplots that build momentum toward a somewhat predictable conclusion.

The author skillfully balances the shocking and emotional aspects of the story with the personal lives of the characters, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of actors, police officers, talent agents, veterans, and musicians. Themes include death, murder, friendship, family, privilege, and much more.

Overall, this complex police procedural features compelling characters and subplots that keep the pages turning. Although it can be read as a standalone novel, I recommend reading the series in order for a better understanding of the characters and their development. I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from St. Martin's Press - Minotaur Books and P.J. Tracy via NetGalley, and all opinions expressed in this review are my own.
