Eve: the new graphic novel from the award-winning… de Una
Eve is a young woman born during the 2020 pandemic who grows to maturity in 2037 in an England whose climate and society are unraveling. Beautiful landscape imagery from northern Britain (though human figures are drawn more awkwardly). The book has themes of climate disruption, racial divisions, the rise of fascist groups; a 'slow' catastrophe. The natural world here is both a threat and a source of solace and sustenance.
A raw and emotional read, Becoming Unbecoming is the rough and unsteady autobiography of Una, who's childhood sexual traumas were inextricably linked with the fear of the Yorkshire Ripper and the general unease and worries that accompany being a female. The threat of sexual violence and/or sexual-based insults and rumors always looms above women, no matter how "pure" or "deserving" they are, and Becoming Unbecoming articulates this general unease clearly and rationally.
