Lays it out, going all the way back to the 1980's.

Way too many Russians to keep track of, and the various threads of illegality will make your head spin. Depressing, but enlightening.

Unger details the history of Trump's long-standing relationship with Russia (notably laundering money for oligarchs through real estate and parroting Russian policy in the American media) followed by all the other people in his sphere before pivoting to Opus Dei and William Barr. The Opus Dei stuff isn't as well documented, but it wouldn't be much of a secret society if it didn't diligently keep secrets. Then Jeffrey Epstein and Robert Maxwell are examined. It sounds amorphous but all these threads intersect at Donald Trump; although the author doesn't establish the sort of over-arching conspiracy favored by fiction, there's much to be disturbed by chronicled here.… (més)

The Title" "Boss Rove", gives you the idea that it will be something of a hatchet-job on Rove. While not exactly a conspiracy-theory book, it does contains a number of unsupported suppositions that all recent Republican dirty campaign tricks can be attributed to Karl Rove. While I'm not so naive as to think Rove hasn't pulled a couple of beauties in his past, and is certainly capable of tearing down an opponent, it's hard to believe that he is singly responsible for all the negative campaign techniques we've seen over these past years.

Nonetheless, while perhaps left unproven and subject to conjecture, there's little doubt that many of the allegations are true. But unfortunately, that seems to be the nature of politics today, and most likely for the foreseeable future.

Many on the right will likely object to these revelations, suppositions, and inferences, just a those on the left would do the same should similar revelations be made against Democratic operative David Axelrod. Bottom line - politics is a dirty business where winning is everything and anything goes when attacking opponents. Karl Rove just seems to be very good at his job.

There've been many book written about the Bush Presidency, most written by people with open access to the Administration, so you hope you're getting facts and not biased opinions. Few offer glowing summaries, and this one is no different. However, this one, being one of the latter books, does a good job of summarizing the many issues associated with the Bush term, and give a better insight into the key players and behind the scenes power brokers than many of the others. The other thing I felt this book did was provide a lot more insight into the many conservative and religious-right advisors who became key players in the State Department, Department of Defense, National Security team, etc. Unger discusses the long-standing ties among many of these neo-cons, their beliefs, and the agenda they carried with them into their jobs. It reminded me somewhat of the motion picture "W" about President Bush, which I expected to be a brutal portrail of the president, but all-in-all, seemed to be a fairly factual if not sympathetic presentation of the Bush years.
