I bought this book as a Christmas present for someone who likes Josephine Tey. I'm not sure if it's a good present - real person fan fic can feel a bit uncomfortable to many people, and it's not very clear how similar the Josephine in these novels is to the real author, or if Tey would have approved of this grisly retelling of her life with added murders. I never quite got into it - I found it dragged a little in places, the large cast of characters were tricky to keep track of, and even the big revelations at the end were surprisingly ungripping - but some of that might be that I was trying to read it around Christmas when I was distracted and stressed. It is strangely in conversation with Black is the Colour of My True Love's Heart, once again the murders are due to a woman having a baby she should not have had, and that same woman trying to re-establish a relationship with the child years later.… (més)

Author Josephine Tey and police officer Archie Penrose gather with friends to celebrate the holidays on 1938 Cornwall's stormy coast before the festivities are interrupted by two brutal deaths on St. Michael's Mount and the arrival of a world-famous film star.

This was a well-written story combining a Christmas gathering with an investigation into two murders. A good variety of characters to keep me guessing. As this takes place close to the start of WWII, there are a few ominious times that Nazis make themselves known. The ending was a bit far-fetched but I still enjoyed it.… (més)

A young woman, a fan of the stage, is murdered on the train to London. The detective sets out to determine if it was connected with Josephine Tey’s play soon coming to an end. With a vast cast of characters, both in the play and not, this is an extraordinarily complex murder mystery—sometimes spoilt by having too many people to keep track of, especially in the audiobook. First in a series, I’d read more, but maybe in IRL format.

I have somehow missed all of the Josephine Tey books by Nicola Upson, starting my journey with Shot with Crimson, the eleventh in the series. And all I can say is that I have a lot of reading to do. This was an outstanding historical mystery set in the very early days of World War II, with flashbacks to the First World War. We move from England to Hollywood, and meet Alfred Hitchcock and his family, along with many different workers in the world of late 1930s filmmaking.

The story was dark and emotional, yet also interesting. I not only felt the pain and regret of the characters, but also felt like a fly on the wall during the production of the movie based on Daphne DuMaurier’s Rebecca.

I had no problem reading this as a standalone, although I’m sure the previous ten novels would have given me a much greater understanding of the characters.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
