Murder on the second floor de Frank Vosper
Challenged by his landlady's haughty daughter to write a "good play", struggling young playwright Hugh Bromilow converts the drab denizens of the boarding house into participants in a drab melodrama about drug running and murder. After it's all over, the young lady turns to young Hugh and again challenges him to write a "good play." Any applause there might have been in 1930 could only have been intended to endorse this injunction.
