Roy Wagner received a B.A. in Medieval History from Harvard University (1961), and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Chicago (1966). He was the Chair of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Virginia where be taught anthropology for 44 years. In his professional life, mostra'n més Professor Wagner specialized in symbolic anthropology, including indigenous conceptual systems involving kin relations, myths and worldview in Melanesia, Australia, and North America. His book The Invention of Culture (1975; 2017 2nd ed.) is considered an anthropological classic, and has been translated into Japanese, Portuguese, Italian and French. His concepts of symbolic obviation, figure-ground reversal, analogic kinship, holography and factuality of personhood have been very influential in the development of anthropological theory in the 80s and 90s. mostra'n menys
