This is the first time that I’ve read a play after seeing it, which is quite a different experience than the other way around. Having seen the play already, this shaped my reading of it, which in a way could be good. It was easier to tell when a humorous moment occurred, and I could hear the music that is meant to accompany the lyrics written on the page. Of course, the downside was I wasn’t experiencing the written play as fully as I had the audio-visual play, so it seemed a little flat in comparison. The story is essentially about finding love, exploring the many different emotions that come into play when dealing with relationships (anxiety, jealousy, etc.). There are a number of humorous bits, as I mentioned above, plus an occasional very prettily turned phrase. Mostly, however, the author is concerned with catching the colloquial language, which makes for some interesting reading (although I have to admit some of the British slang was lost on me). This isn’t a great piece of literature, but it’s entertaining, and it’s a quick, light read. However, beware if you’re squeamish – the language is rather sexually explicit at times.… (més)
