This missal-sized volume contains most of the well-known war poems, of course, but many of the poems in this anthology were unknown to me. Certainly one cannot fail to be reminded of the ghastliness of the war on the Western Front - the noiseless dead, the head hung down, the nameless men who die for me. There's a beauty in the words, to be sure, but no beauty in what those words convey.

A reminder for those who believe things can't get any worse: things can be and have been far far worse.
