If you're a time traveler, this is the book for you.

If you look inside, you'll see the subtitle "An Exhibition Held at The Baltimore Museum of Art." If you don't, you might think the volume a general discussion of illuminated manuscripts. It isn't. It is specifically about a museum show in 1949.

And the printing reflects that. There is only one color plate, so you don't get to see the beauty of the many manuscripts gathered for the exhibition. There are many more black-and-white plates, but they are often quite small. It's a rather discouraging assortment.

And there is almost no overall commentary -- no discussion of the rise of illustrated manuscripts, or the techniques involved. So it's not a book about illuminated books; it's just a catalog.

The good news is, all the manuscripts are described in detail. If you want to learn about a particular manuscript, there is useful information here.

If you can identify the manuscript. There is no index of manuscripts -- neither by city nor by catalog number nor by content. So you have to read the whole book to find out if a manuscript is in it! And even that isn't much help (e.g. while the descriptions say that a book is a Latin Bible, it doesn't say whether it is Vulgate or Old Latin).

As a fanatic about old manuscripts, I learned a little -- but only a little -- from this book. If you want some nice black-and-white illustrations, you might also find it useful for that. But, overall, it's a severe disappointment. To really appreciate it, you had to be there -- and, of course, you can hardly hope to be at an exhibition that happened 65 years ago as of this writing!
