The book tells of an interesting life, fighting and later meeting Napoleon, sailing the high seas combating slave traders, and the miscellaneous small adventures of a naval officer. In mid-life Wauchope became a born again Christian, his Christianity permeates the book. His objection to swearing and prostitutes visiting naval ships caused a certain amount of friction with his superiors.
