September: Jennifer Weiner a Monthly Author Reads (agost 2018)

Ressenyes

When India, the new wife of billionaire Marcus is unsuccessful at becoming pregnant, they enlist an egg donor and a surrogate. The money Jules will get from her egg will put her addict father through rehab. Annie will garner enough money as the surrogate to change her little family’s lives, but Bettina, Marcus’ 23-year-old daughter, is hell-bent on proving to her father and the world that India is not who she says she is.

When Marcus suddenly dies just days before the baby is born, India is nowhere to be found. Left to raise the baby, Bettina finds a new, supportive family in Jules and Annie. And months after Rory is settling in as the baby to multiple mom-figures, in saunters India to take up her place as Rory’s rightful mother. The four women work to find the space to allow each other a place in Rory’s life.

Then Came You is unlike any other book i’ve Read regarding family - and I loved it. It’s hard to find something truly unique with so many wonderful books out there, but Jennifer Weiner has done just that. There was a moment in the last pages were I almost allowed myself to hate the ending, but I leaned into what the author was doing and it turned out beautifully.

Then Came You sounds like it is super deep, but it isn’t, just a beautifully written story about the lives of several women who become unwittingly entwined forever through the love of a child. Beautiful concept. Beautiful story.

Best Friends Forever is a slow-moving tale about just that, two girls who grow up as best friends and after life’s twists and turns, come back to be again, BFFs as adults. The story revolves around Addie’s weight, the gain and the loss, and Val’s rising star, first as a cheerleader, then on the nightly news. In the mix is a class reunion, a man who gets his comeuppance, and a cop who falls for one of the BFFs.

Jennifer Weiner is a very good writer, her prose is succinct and realistic, moving in and out of one theme to another, but Best Friends Forever will not go down as a favorite of mine. I find that I say this a lot in my reviews: There is nothing wrong with the book, but it just wasn’t a zinger for me. That being said, I certainly wouldn’t discount the book on any level, just not one I will write home about.

Why the 5 stars you might ask, because it is very well written and just because the story itself didn’t move me to tears, or heartbreak, or whatever emotional level I may have been looking for at the time, doesn’t mean it warrants anything less than well done. I will read another book of Ms. Weiner, as she is that good of a writer that I have not lost interest.

A well-written, almost wrapped in a tidy bow book about the hard-hitting ripple effects of a #MeToo event.

SPOILER ALERT

That Summer read close to home; I could see how it happened, the era of the good-old-boys, the "she wanted it" times we lived in (the 80's), and the shame and guilt felt by the victim thinking the assault was somehow her fault.

Jennifer Weiner did an exceptional job of intertwining the events of the past with the current fallout, how the victim finds her perpetrators, showing how damaged, or in one case, "un" damaged they became over their deeds.

A book about privilege, about loss (due to events that happened in youth), about holding people accountable, about finding the strength to move on even if it takes decades to make the first step toward that, about one man's possible inability to move beyond and another's seemingly unwillingness to accept responsibility, the, it was so long ago and I'm not that person anymore mentality.

That Summer is a sad, easy written (not an in-your-face slap) where the reader is sucked in by the lazy settings, the commonality of the lives until it culminates into one big sad mess of reality.

While That Summer is obviously written more for the female audience, a similar book written for the male perspective could serve future generations well.

Abby Stern is on a girls weekend in NYC when she meets Sebastian and has an unforgettable night with him. But, she leaves before he awakens and she heads back to Philadelphia and begins a relationship with her childhood sweetheart, Mark. She met Mark at "fat camp" and he was her first love. They reconnect as adults, and Mark is now thin, Abby is plus-size. She is self-conscious about it, but along with her friend Lizzie, enjoys cycling. She is asked to lead a bike tour to Niagara Falls, and is shocked to see Sebastian on the trip (2 years after their night). She wants to avoid him, but finds herself falling for him, and questioning her relationship with Mark.
Cute rom-com with a heroine who has some issues, and is learning to love herself. Sebastian also needs to mature, and the ending leaves things open, but hopeful.
I enjoyed it. It also addresses some other issues, e.g. teen pregnancy.
