Biografia breu
David Walter Weiss was born to a Jewish family in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, a son of Heinrich Hillel and Julie Weiss. His father was a rabbi, professor, and leader of Austria's Jewish community. In 1938, at the time of the Nazi Anschluss (annexation) of his country, David was 11 years old and living in Vienna. He and his family fled the country to escape the Nazis. The emigrated to the USA, where his father became the rabbi of a Yiddish-speaking immigrant congregation on New York's Lower East Side. David served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948. He graduated from Brooklyn College in 1949 and earned a PhD in microbiology from Rutgers University and another PhD in medicine from Oxford University. In 1951, he married Judith Weintrob, with whom he had three children. In 1966, they moved to Israel. He served with the Israel Defense Forces from 1968 until 1982.After having conducted research and taught at institutions such as the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York, Oxford University, and the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Weiss became an eminent cancer researcher at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He has been a member of the editorial boards of Transplantation Proceedings, Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy, Immunopharmacology, and Cancer Therapeutics and Pharmacology. He published a memoir, Reluctant Return: A Survivor’s Journey to an Austrian Town, in 1999.
