Thirty-two passive programming ideas and plans intended for patrons of all ages, even intergenerational audiences. The author introduces passive programming not as a replacement for traditional library programs, but rather as a supplement; activities that can take place “over an extended period of time and by being available for patrons to participate in anytime the library is open.” The programs illustrated in the book all have very low costs, making them especially attractive to libraries facing budget cuts, and take advantage of supplies that probably already are housed within the library such as basic office supplies and equipment, paper, writing utensils, perforated tickets, book-stands, etc. The ideas fall under the following categories: books and reading, writing, mysteries, scavenger hunts, get creative, exchanges, partnering with outside organizations, and theme months. Each passive programming guide is complete with a description, supplies needed, how to make it happen, an evaluation, collection tie-in ideas, alternative approaches, and resources. For most of the programming ideas, there are example full-page advertising posters, photographs of already set up displays in libraries, and example forms available to copy and print.
