Don Yarber

Written back in the 1990s when they just called it a mystery, no noir, no cozy just a mystery. An ex-cop drug dealer is murdered, a young man claiming he has found a way to make a lot of money is murdered, the girlfriend of the young man is murdered. There is a lot of murder going on in this Southern California setting, just before the time of the cell phone when you would stop at a gas station to use a payphone. These are all elements of how mysteries were written in the 1990s and I thoroughly enjoyed the reading. It was fast-paced, had connections you could follow with a slightly different moral code. Corpses and Canyons was an exciting page turner by Don Yarber. Rarely, do I have the time to sit down and read a book from cover to cover in one evening. This book was the second in the “Kip Yardley Mystery” series. I was a bit nervous about reading a second book in a series, because I had not read the first, but as soon as I had started to read it, it did not matter. Kip Yardley, P.I., is a likeable character, helping out an old friend Jeremy, as they try to solve the murder of Jeremy’s friend. The book has lots of plot twists and turns, much like driving through a canyon road, and I enjoyed the unpredictability of the story up until the very end. The characters were interesting, and you never knew who to trust. It had all of the makings of a good mystery.… (més)
