A Pure Solar World: Sun Ra and the Birth of… de Paul Youngquist

Youngquist focuses especially on Sun Ra in Chicago and his involvement in Thmei Research, an esoteric group of folks from Bronzeville, Chicago's South Side Black community. Youngquist outlines Richard Wright's _Native Son_ to fill in some detail on life there. Youngquist's description of Washington Park were splendid. This all creates a context for Sun Ra's music.

Youngquist goes quite a bit into the poetics of Sun Ra, cascades of word play, chains of ideas. I can't say I followed it all too precisely - still too earth-bound, I fear! Youngquist points out repeatedly that Sun Ra was into discipline, not freedom. His portrayal of the world of Sun Ra is quite accurate, as far as I can tell. I lived in Philadelphia from 1977-1982 and got to see Sun Ra perform quite a few times, and chatted with members of the band occasionally.

There is a delightful chapter at the end of this book where Youngquist traces Sun Ra's influence on other, later musicians. It's a real feast! I knew about maybe a quarter of his references. What a fun way to trigger further exploration!… (més)
