Youngquist focuses especially on Sun Ra in Chicago and his involvement in Thmei Research, an esoteric group of folks from Bronzeville, Chicago's South Side Black community. Youngquist outlines Richard Wright's _Native Son_ to fill in some detail on life there. Youngquist's description of Washington Park were splendid. This all creates a context for Sun Ra's music.

Youngquist goes quite a bit into the poetics of Sun Ra, cascades of word play, chains of ideas. I can't say I followed it all too precisely - still too earth-bound, I fear! Youngquist points out repeatedly that Sun Ra was into discipline, not freedom. His portrayal of the world of Sun Ra is quite accurate, as far as I can tell. I lived in Philadelphia from 1977-1982 and got to see Sun Ra perform quite a few times, and chatted with members of the band occasionally.

There is a delightful chapter at the end of this book where Youngquist traces Sun Ra's influence on other, later musicians. It's a real feast! I knew about maybe a quarter of his references. What a fun way to trigger further exploration!
