A Ukraine Reading List

Descripció
Ukraine is on the minds of many readers right now, given current events, so we're dedicating our March List of the Month to the history of this country and its people. Please add history (nonfiction) and historical fiction titles to this list, and only downvote titles if they do not fall into this category. Unlike many of our List of the Month lists, you may add ten titles, so feel free to include those that look interesting, but which you may not yet have had the chance to read.

Explicacions
proximity1: "Since the early 2000s Russia has consistently sought to maintain and regain influence as well as reinvigorate its efforts to expand its territory in the former Soviet Union republics." ... "This book will demonstrate that Moscow's hold on (the Russian-speaking diaspora or what it calls "Russian compatriots"--ethnic Russians and Russian speakers rresiding abroad) serves as an effect pretext for and instrument of much of Russian's expansionist foreign policy. ... the territorial implications of Moscow's policies toward its compatriots have been demonstrated in Ukraine's Crimea and eastern territories, in Georgia's South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and Moldova's Transnistria." ... "While neo-imperialism has been a prominent trend in Putin's era, it is in fact rooted in the history of the Russian Empire. There is an undeniable historical continuity between present Russian imperial projects and past projects of the Romanovss and the Soviets. The Russian Federation has in many respects followed in the footsteps of its historical predecessors and will continue to do so because of the similar ideological, cultural, security and geopolitical drivers that have been rooted in the centuries-long imperial experience of the three empires—the Russian Federation, the Soviet Union, and the Russian Empire—that have occupied the same Russian political space and territories.” … “Russia's policies toward the inhabitants of its imperial space have also been consistent for centuries.” … “Nonetheless, Russia's imperial revival appeared like a marginal idea in the broader context of Russian foreign policy for most of the 1990s and 2000s. … Some suggested that the rising nationalism and aggression was Putin's response to his weakening popularity and growing opposition at home and an attempt to rally the country behind the Russian flag. But few took the rising signs of Russia's vaulting ambitions seriously.” ... “Simply put, this book will argue that reimperialization—either by regaining lost territories or by maintaining influence and sometimes regaining it where it has been lost—is the end-goal of Moscow's policies.” -- Agnia Grigas, from Chapter 1: The Return to Empire

Explicacions
johninvienna: Bukovina, "the Duchy of Bukovina" belonged to Austria since 1775 and was a crown land of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1867 until 1918. It is located half in Ukraine and half in Romania. Since its capital was Czernowitz ( Černivci ) and this now lies in Ukraine, it is filed under Ukraine. A good deal of the book also deals with the Romanian part with the capital of Suceava.
