A Firm of Poets Christmas Do
Seven Artspace, dimarts, desembre 23, 2014 a les 8pm
An evening of humourous, insightful and occasionally heartbreaking poetry from this year’s festival word of mouth sensation: The Firm. Holding your hand through the hard times.

This fabulous, fun and funky foursome play an eclectic mix of jolly sing-along songs on ukulele, bass and percussion. For one night only they are bringing their ‘Christmas Ukulele Disco’ to Seven Arts. Get your dancing shoes on and your glitter balls a spinning it’s time to ‘Get Down’ with Some Like It Ossett!

A Firm of Poets is a collective of writers and spoken word artists based in West Yorkshire. The ‘Firm’ not only showcase themselves, but have a desire to expose the best of emerging talent from the region and beyond.

Matt Abbott (aka Skint & Demoralised)
Matt Abbott is a punk poet with a remarkable amount of experience for his age. Making his stage début a few weeks before his 18th birthday, he signed a major record deal with Universal at the age of 19 as lyricist in the band Skint & Demoralised.

Ralph Dartford
Ralph studied creative writing at Birkbeck College under the tutelage of late Michael Donaghy where he received a First. He currently works for the Arts Council England where he develops emerging artists across all art forms. Ralph writes narrative poems from the heart. Sometimes funny, sometimes bittersweet, sometimes as sad as a lost dog.

John Darwin
John has been writing and performing his poetry since 2008. He was the founder member and singer/songwriter with Leeds based band Flowers For Agatha in his youth. He is driven by raw emotion, some of his work is confessional and he is influenced strongly by American poets of the 20th century, Anne Sexton, Wallace Stevens, Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath and WD Snodgrass.

Geneviève L. Walsh
Geneviève has been resident compére at Spoken Weird since May 2013; organising and running a poetry, spoken word and storytelling event in Halifax on a monthly basis. Having noticed that Halifax didn’t have a regular poetry event, she filled the gap in the market by providing one. (Nevov)

Ray Brown – In All Beginnings
Seven Artspace, dimecres, maig 20, 2015 a les 7:30pm
Ray Brown launches his novel, ‘In All Beginnings’. Hosted by Mike McGowan, Ray will read, answer questions, sign books, and possibly tell one stunning joke.

Sex in the Seventies and love in the Eighties
The peace movement and the miners’ strike in Leeds
Pickets…pints and poems… Grosvenor Square… Greenham… Molesworth
Labour Party meetings… Non-violent direct action
Mid-night arrest… phone taps… laughter and tears

In 1984 areas of Britain resembled a police state. Simon and Lindy, ‘lovers against the bomb’, are peace activists drawn into the yearlong miners’ strike. For them it is a time of fear, laughter, homemade wine, and home grown dope. A world of collecting buckets and button badges, peace camps and picket lines, Labour Party meetings and Non Violent Direct Action workshops. It’s a time of constant opposition to the state. And a time of self discovery. Through it all Simon revisits the Seventies, his days of expensive haircuts and fawn safari suits, alcohol and affairs, and his first encounter with Lindy.

Combining acute observation with commentary and social satire, In All Beginnings’ captures the times and ends with an unexpected stylistic shift. (Nevov)

Author Talk: Jane Ver Mulm

The South Sioux City Public Library is proud to bring Iowa author, Jane Ver Mulm to the library to promote her book Finding Paradise. Jane lives in Rock Valley. In her novel, Ellen Schmidt finds herself out of step in the world in which she lives. Considered a spinster with the world around her, her only friends were the slaves her family owns. After her father arranges her marriage she must face a series of difficult circumstances at the beginning of the Civil War, setting her on a path that seems to be out of her control. Book Discussion: 'You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey'
South Sioux City Public Library, dimecres, gener 12 a les 6:30pm
Join Irene Lopez for a discussion of "You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey" on Wednesday, January 12th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Library Cafe.

Check out your books with your library card at the circulation desk. We will discuss the whole book. You will want to read it before the event.

Writer and performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Amber Ruffin writes with her sister Lacey Lamar with humor and heart to share absurd anecdotes about everyday experiences of racism. Now a writer and performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers and host of The Amber Ruffin Show, Amber Ruffin lives in New York, where she is no one's First Black Friend and everyone is, as she puts it, "stark raving normal." But Amber's sister Lacey? She's still living in their home state of Nebraska, and trust us, you'll never believe what happened to Lacey. From racist donut shops to strangers putting their whole hand in her hair, from being mistaken for a prostitute to being mistaken for Harriet Tubman, Lacey is a lightning rod for hilariously ridiculous yet all-too-real anecdotes. She's the perfect mix of polite, beautiful, petite, and Black that apparently makes people think "I can say whatever I want to this woman." And now, Amber and Lacey share these entertainingly horrifying stories through their laugh-out-loud sisterly banter. Painfully relatable or shockingly eye-opening (depending on how often you have personally been followed by security at department stores), this book tackles modern-day racism with the perfect balance of levity and gravity.
