December 2020 Lot

Giveaway Ended: December 28 at 06:00 pm EST

Denise Hamilton (Editor), Aimee Bender (Contribution by), Lisa Morton (Contribution by)
The debut title of a new city-based anthology series featuring stories with speculative, sci-fi, and paranormal themes. As an incubator of the future, Los Angeles has long mesmerized writers from Philip K. Dick to Aldous Huxley. With its natural disasters, Hollywood artifice, staggering wealth and poverty, urban sprawl, and diversity, one can argue that Los Angeles is already so weird, surreal, irrational, and mythic that any fiction emerging from this place should be considered speculative. So, best-selling author Denise Hamilton commissioned some stories and did exactly that. In Speculative Los Angeles, fourteen of the city’s most prophetic voices reimagine the city in very different ways. In these pages, you’ll encounter twenty-first-century changelings, dirigibles plying the suburban skies, black holes and jacaranda men lurking in deep suburbia, beachfront property in Century City, walled-off canyons and coastlines reserved for the wealthy, psychic death cults, robot nursemaids, and an alternate LA where Spanish land grants never gave way to urbanization. As with our city-based Akashic Noir Series, each story in Speculative Los Angeles is set in a distinct neighborhood filled with local color, landmarks, and flavor. Since the best speculative fiction provides a wormhole into other worlds while also commenting on our own, that is exactly what you’ll find here. Featuring brand-new stories by: Aimee Bender, Lisa Morton, Alex Espinoza, Ben H. Winters, Denise Hamilton, Lynell George, Stephen Blackmoore, Francesca Lia Block, Charles Yu, Duane Swierczynski, Luis J. Rodriguez, A.G. Lombardo, Kathleen Kaufman, and S. Qiouyi Lu.

July 2013 Lot: 2 Llibres Offered

Giveaway Ended: July 29 at 06:00 pm EDT

The DoubleDown series continues with two novellas that cast mid-twentieth-century America in a dark light. (1) In Smog, tomboy Joey thinks she’s got the perfect life: It’s 1965 and she lives in an idyllic Southern California suburb where everyone works for the aerospace industry. But when something goes wrong with a rocket test, the smog thickens and the teenagers change into rampaging killers. Can Joey survive long enough to escape the neighborhood before she joins their ranks? (2) Joey Third will gamble on anything, but the old suitcase he wins at a baggage auction turns out to be a bad bet. Inside is a record player, and the song it repeats lures the listener to surrender to its mysterious voice. Charlie Stewart senses the music’s intent, but can he find a way to turn it off forever, or will the cursed song possess the souls of all who listen?

October 2011 Lot

Giveaway Ended: October 31 at 06:00 pm EDT

A first edition of The Halloween Encyclopedia was published by McFarland in 2003 (Booklist: “a worthy addition to public and school libraries as well as the reference shelves of journalists and leaders of community events”); it was the first encyclopedic reference book on the cultural phenomenon (which also deals with such related holidays as Britain’s Guy Fawkes Day, Mexico’s Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, and the Celtic celebration Samhain). Now updated to 2010, this second edition includes more than 50 new entries, covering subjects ranging from Folk Art to African American legends. Many existing entries have been expanded and revised, with new entries (“Chronology of Halloween” and “Halloween in Literature and the Arts”) in both appendices. Also featured are more than a dozen new illustrations, and an expanded bibliography.
