Featuring new stories by: Margaret Atwood, Tananarive Due, Joyce Carol Oates, Megan Abbott, Aimee Bender, Cassandra Khaw, Lisa Lim, Elizabeth Hand, Valerie Martin, Raven Leilani, Sheila Kohler, Joanna Margaret, Lisa Tuttle, Aimee LaBrie, and Yumi Dineen Shiroma.
While the common belief is that "body horror" as a subgenre of horror fiction dates back to the 1970s, Joyce Carol Oates suggests that Medusa, the snake-haired gorgon in Greek mythology, is the "quintessential emblem of female body horror." In A Darker Shade of Noir: New Stories of Body Horror by Women Writers, Oates has assembled a spectacular cast to explore this subgenre focusing on distortions to the human body in the most fascinating of ways.
"Should we know nothing of the female monsters of antiquity," Oates writes in her introduction to the volume, "still we would know that body horror in its myriad manifestations speaks most powerfully to women and girls. To be female is to inhabit a body that is by nature vulnerable to forcible invasion, susceptible to impregnation and repeated pregnancies, condemned to suffer childbirth, often in the past early deaths in childbirth and in the aftermath of childbirth."

Now in paperback, Innocence Project attorney M. Chris Fabricant presents an insider's journey into the heart of a broken, racist system of justice and the role junk science plays in maintaining the status quo
"No one in America will ever know the number of innocent people convicted, sent to prison, and even executed because of the flood of rotten forensics and bogus scientific opinions presented to juries. In this intriguing and beautifully crafted book, Innocence Project lawyer M. Chris Fabricant illustrates how wrongful convictions occur, and he makes it obvious how they could be prevented." —John Grisham, author of A Time for Mercy
"Fierce and absorbing... Fabricant chronicles the battles he and his colleagues have fought to unravel a century of fraudulent experts and the bad court decisions that allowed them to thrive." —Washington Post
"Readers—especially those fond of TV detectives and their infallible crime labs—will be flabbergasted by [Fabricant's] list of forensic techniques long used by labs, including the FBI's, and proclaimed by highly paid 'expert witnesses' that, when investigated by competent researchers, turn out to be unreliable or worthless... A brilliant rebuttal of junk science in the courtroom." —Kirkus Reviews, STARRED review
From CSI to Forensic Files to the celebrated reputation of the FBI crime lab, forensic scientists have long been mythologized in American popular culture as infallible crime solvers. Juries put their faith in "expert witnesses" and innocent people have been executed as a result. Innocent people are still on death row today, condemned by junk science.
In 2012, the Innocence Project began searching for prisoners convicted by junk science, and three men, each convicted of capital murder, became M. Chris Fabricant's clients. Junk Science and the American Criminal Justice System chronicles the fights to overturn their wrongful convictions and to end the use of the "science" that destroyed their lives. Weaving together courtroom battles from Mississippi to Texas to New York City and beyond, Fabricant takes the reader on a journey into the heart of a broken, racist system of justice and the role forensic science plays in maintaining the status quo.
At turns gripping, enraging, illuminating, and moving, Junk Science is a meticulously researched insider's perspective of the American criminal justice system. Previously untold stories of wrongful executions, corrupt prosecutors, and quackery masquerading as science animate Fabricant's true crime narrative. The paperback edition features a brand-new index as well as an updated introduction and final chapter chronicling the Innocence Project's continued fight against junk science in courtrooms across America.

Eggplant seeds, a lullaby in a vanishing language, an embroidered dress. When people flee their homes, the things they save speak of beauty and suffering and the indomitable human spirit.
In an era of mass migration in which more than 100 million people are displaced comes this lyrical portrait of Syrian and Iraqi refugees and the belongings they carry. What We Remember Will Be Saved is a book of hope, home, and the stories we hold within us when everything else has been lost.
Journalist and scholar Stephanie Saldaña, who lived in Syria before the war, sets out on a journey across nine countries to meet refugees and learn what they salvaged from the ruins when they escaped. Now, in the narratives of six extraordinary women and men, from Mt. Sinjar to Aleppo to Lesvos to Amsterdam, we discover that the little things matter a great deal. Saldaña introduces us to a woman who saved her city in a dress, a musician who saved his stories in songs, and a couple who rebuilt their destroyed pharmacy even as the city around them fell apart. Together they provide a window into a religiously diverse corner of the Middle East on the edge of unraveling, and the people keeping it alive with their stories.
Born of years of friendship and reporting, What We Remember Will Be Saved is a breathtaking, elegiac odyssey into the heart of the largest refugee crisis in modern history. It reminds us that refugees are storytellers and speakers of vanishing languages, and of how much history can be distilled into a piece of fabric, or eggplant seeds. What we salvage tells our story. What we remember will be saved.

Cats have a lot to say!
Just like people, cats share their feelings in all sorts of ways. It's up to us to uncover what our furry friends are trying to tell us. Are they gently purring or curiously crouching? Is their tail straight or swishing? Featuring a diverse cast of kids and cats from all over the world, this social-emotional learning book models empathy and compassion. Young readers will learn to look for the different ways their friends―human and feline alike―share their feelings.
Each silly, sassy cat expresses a different emotion to their human pal, who responds to the cat's needs by handing them a treat to soothe their nerves, giving them space to calm down, or offering lots of cuddles. The kids also describe how they communicate those same feelings. Sometimes they hold hands with their best friends, ask their parents for a hug, or say they need to take a break.
Written by award-winning author (and cat owner) Guy Brown, with colorful and lively illustrations from Davide Ortu, How Cats Say I Love You teaches young kids how to care for others' feelings as well as their own, while showing that healthy relationships are rooted in communication.

A gripping, intricately plotted political thriller set on the campaign trail of the USA's next—and because of crucial flaws in the electoral system—its last election; from former presidential candidate Andrew Yang and author Stephen Marche
THE LAST ELECTION is a unique political thriller about an outlandish yet frighteningly possible—even probable—scenario in America's near future, during the crucial 2024 presidential election. Though it is fiction, it is a wake-up call to a country tearing itself apart.
The story focuses on two characters: Mikey Ricci, a political operative who has lost faith in traditional structures following the bitter races of 2016 and 2020; and Martha Kass, the anonymous tip supervisor of the New York Times. In 2023, Ricci becomes the campaign manager of a third-party candidate who runs on a popular, centrist platform and whose frank and honest manner stands in stark contrast to the candidates of the two major parties. Ricci faces off against the massive machinery of both political parties, as well as their invested media and dark money supporters--the source of true power in America. Even so, the candidate's message begins to gain ground.
In the meantime, Kass stumbles upon a plot by the current Joint Chiefs of Staff to seize power in the anticipated chaos of the coming election. She hopes it is too improbable to be taken seriously. But as the idea that Ricci's candidate might win enough electors to upset the delicate balance of America's two-party system takes hold, the threat becomes frighteningly real.
Events unfold at the frenetic pace of the campaign trail, and Kass and Ricci become unlikely allies as they bear witness to what might be the end of America as a democratic republic. If no candidate can accrue the coveted majority of 270 electors, who wins? The electoral system collapses in uncertainty as Congress's role in certification becomes unfathomably complex. When no one is certain who the winner is, the stage is set for a corrupt seizure of power. Will the American experiment end?

From the moment European settlers reached these shores, the American apocalypse began. But Native Americans did not vanish. Apocalypse did not fully destroy them, and it doesn't have to destroy us.
Pandemics and war, social turmoil and corrupt governments, natural disasters and environmental collapse--it's hard not to watch the signs of the times and feel afraid. But we can journey through that fear to find hope. With the warnings of a prophet and the lively voice of a storyteller, Choctaw elder and author ofLadder to the LightSteven Charleston speaks to all who sense apocalyptic dread rising around and within.
You'd be hard pressed to find an apocalypse more total than the one Native America has confronted for more than four hundred years. Yet Charleston's ancestors are a case study in the liberating and hopeful survival of a spiritual community. How did Indigenous communities achieve the miracle of their own survival and live to tell the tale? What strategies did America's Indigenous people rely on that may help us to endure an apocalypse--or perhaps even prevent one from happening?
Charleston points to four Indigenous prophets who helped their people learn strategies for surviving catastrophe: Ganiodaiio of the Seneca, Tenskwatawa of the Shawnee, Smohalla of the Wanapams, and Wovoka of the Paiute. Through gestures such as turning the culture upside down, finding a fixed place on which to stand, listening to what the earth is saying, and dancing a ghostly vision into being, these prophets helped their people survive. Charleston looks, too, at the Hopi people of the American Southwest, whose sacred stories tell them they were created for a purpose. These ancestors' words reach across centuries to help us live through apocalypse today with courage and dignity.

From the award-winning author of the North of the Tension Line series comes a timely, heartfelt collection of essays.
In the lyrical prose style familiar to her readers, author J.F. Riordan records a natural world minutely observed. From an examination of life's fragility via a bathtub spider, to a tree-borne cluster of raccoons huddled together in a polar vortex, the essays capture the peculiar isolation, focus, and intensity of the pandemic lockdown, while marking the contrast of nature's ruthlessness with human suffering.
"Our life's landscape isn't geographical. It's human. When you are young, life is an endless horizon of years ahead. It's hard to realize how fast time goes, and how quickly the people we assume will always be here can suddenly be gone, changing the world forever. It's easy to allow the demands of every day to take up our energy and our hours. But in this, in every day, we have the essence of our lives. Our lives are only time, and, however far off the horizon seems, finite."

The road to higher ed is paved with good intentions.
The desire for relevance—and to save his marriage—is ultimately what pushed Peter Cook to leave his beloved Alaska for the prestigious Parker College. Lured by the chance to work with his childhood political idol turned college president, Peter moves his family to Portland, Oregon to help promote his hero’s fundraising initiative that would eliminate financial status from the college’s admissions process.
Peter arrives on campus as the Great Recession looms, the stock market is trending toward disaster, and the opioid crisis has breached the walls of the privileged college. He quickly learns the reality of Parker College strays far from its professed idealistic mission after discovering a plot to cover-up felonious drug activity in return for a seven-figure payday to the Need Blind Campaign.
While plumbing the depths of his conscience for the conviction to do the right thing, Peter’s untreated childhood trauma resurfaces, threatening to cloud his perception when it needs to be at its sharpest. Peter must stabilize his mental health while also trying to parse competing versions of “the truth” as law enforcement investigates the criminal conspiracy.

A tour de force that diagnoses the structural root of the violence that plagues us all.
Trauma surgeon and professor Dr. Brian H. Williams has seen it all: gunshot wounds, stabbings, and traumatic brain injuries. In The Bodies Keep Coming, Williams ushers us into the trauma bay, where the wounds of a national emergency amass.
As a Harvard-trained physician, Williams learned to keep his head down and his scalpel ready. As a Black man, he learned to swallow the rage when patients told him to take out the trash. Just days after the tragic police shootings of two Black men, Williams tried to save the lives of police officers shot in Dallas in the deadliest incident for US law enforcement since 9/11. Thrust into the spotlight in a nation that loves feel-good stories about heroism more than hard truths about racism, Williams came to rethink everything he thought he knew about medicine, injustice, and what true healing looks like.
Now, in raw and intimate detail, Williams narrates not only the events of that night in 2016, but the grief and anger of a Black doctor on the front lines of trauma care. Working in the physician-writer tradition of Atul Gawande and Damon Tweedy, Williams diagnoses the roots of the violence that plagues us. He draws a through line between white supremacy, gun violence, and the bodies he tries to revive, and he trains his surgeon's gaze on the structural ills that manifest themselves in the bodies of his patients. What if racism is a feature of our healthcare system, not a bug? What if profiting from racial inequality is exactly what it was designed to do?
Black and brown bodies will continue to be wracked by all types of violence, Williams argues, until something changes. Until we transform policy and law with compassion and care, the bodies will keep coming.

For fans of Everyone Poops, a hilariously fresh take on POO! A trip to the zoo turns into a very silly discussion about poo, as two siblings wonder what sort of poo each and every creature would do.
One day, Daddy Rat announces to his baby rats that he'll be taking them to the zoo... but only if they're good, which means no talking about poo! And yet, before the family can even leave the house, the two rascally siblings can't help but wonder... what sort of poo would an astronaut do? Shiny, silver, space-age poo! Rocket-powered, weightless poo, and it spins round and round like a planet does, too!
Head chefs, balloon sellers, blue whales... everyone and everything must have a unique poo, and the siblings simply have to stop and imagine each and every one (much to the chagrin of Daddy Rat, who is getting increasingly irritated with all the poo talk). Once the rats finally reach the zoo, things escalate, because of course each and every animal in the zoo must do a special kind of poo! Finally, Daddy Rat has simply had enough, and is forced to sit down and explain the facts to his curious kids. And when he thinks he may have gotten through to his youngsters, he encounters a surprising (and smelly) twist which will have little rats everywhere laughing out loud!

How do Bible passages written thousands of years ago apply to politics today? What can we learn from America's history of using the Bible in politics? How can we converse with people whose views differ from our own?
In The Ballot and the Bible, Kaitlyn Schiess explores these questions and more. She unpacks examples of how Americans have connected the Bible to politics in the past, highlighting times it was applied well and times it was egregiously misused.
Schiess combines American political history and biblical interpretation to help readers faithfully read Scripture, talk with others about it, and apply it to contemporary political issues--and to their lives. Rather than prescribing what readers should think about specific hot-button issues, Schiess outlines core biblical themes around power, allegiance, national identity, and more.
Readers will be encouraged to pursue a biblical basis for their political engagement with compassion and confidence.
“Schiess sets out a new vision for biblical language use: instead of ‘plucking passages out of their context’ and retrofitting them for predetermined political agendas, those combing the Bible for present-day insight should consider ‘the larger context of God’s redemptive story.’ Buttressing her claims with impressive close analysis, Schiess sets out a nuanced look at America’s legacy of scriptural language, and readers will find especially useful her guidelines for responsible biblical interpretation when engaging in political discourse. This is a boon for activists looking to the Bible for inspiration.” —Publisher's Weekly, starred review

Award-winning author, screenwriter, and editor Gary Phillips gathers his most thrilling, outlandish, and madcap pulp fiction in an 17-story collection that straddles the line between bizarro, science fiction, noir, and superhero classics.
Aztec vampires, astral projecting killers, oxygen stealing bombs, undercover space rangers, aliens occupying Los Angeles, right wing specters haunting the 'hood, masked vigilantes, and mad scientists in their underground lairs plotting world domination populate the stories in this rip-snorting collection. In these pages grindhouse melds with blaxploitation along with strong doses of B movie hardcore drive-in fare.
Phillips, editor of the Anthony Award-winning The Obama Inheritance: Fifteen Stories of Conspiracy Noir, and author of One-Shot Harry and Matthew Henson and the Ice Temple of Harlem, said this about pulp. "The most common definition of pulp is it's fast-paced, a story containing out there characters and a wild plot. There is that. But certainly, as we've now arrived at the era of retro-pulp, these stories have elements of characterization: not just action, but a glimpse behind the steely eyes of these doers of incredible deeds."
As an added bonus, Phillips resurrects Phantasmo, a Golden Age comics character created by Black artist-writer E.C. Stoner in an all-new outing of ethereal doings (includes 4 original illustrations by cover artist Adam Shaw).

A triumphantly feminist retelling of ancient creation myths in the tradition of Madeline Miller and Claire North.
Lyrically rendered, this epic U.S. debut tells the story of the woman known as Adam's first wife and her fall from Paradise and quest for revenge.
Before Eve, there was Lilith.
Lilith and Adam are equal and happy in the Garden of Eden. Until Adam decides Lilith should submit to his will and lie beneath him. She refuses—and is banished forever from Paradise.
Demonized and sidelined, Lilith watches in fury as God creates Eve, the woman who accepts her submission. But Lilith has a secret: she has already tasted the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. Endowed with Wisdom, she knows why Asherah—God's wife and equal, the Queen of Heaven—is missing. Lilith has a plan: she will rescue Eve, find Asherah, restore balance to the world, and regain her rightful place in Paradise.
Lilith's quest for justice drives her throughout history, from the ziggurats of Ancient Sumer, to the court of Israel's Queen Jezebel, and to the side of a radical preacher in Roman Judea. Noah's wife, Norea, Jezebel and Mary Magdalene all play their part in Lilith's enlightenment. In the modern age, as she observes the catastrophic consequences of a world built on inequality, Lilith finally understands what must be done to correct the wrong done to women—and all humankind—at the beginning of time.
Inspired by ancient myths and suppressed scriptures, Lilith is a thought-provoking and ambitious novel with an evocative literary voice and a triumphantly engaging heroine.

Power. Fear. Violence. These three idols of Christian nationalism are corrupting American Christianity.
Andrew Whitehead is a leading scholar on Christian nationalism in America and speaks widely on its effects within Christian communities. In this book, he shares his journey and reveals how Christian nationalism threatens the spiritual lives of American Christians and the church.
Whitehead shows how Christians harm their neighbors when they embrace the idols of power, fear, and violence. He uses two key examples—racism and xenophobia—to demonstrate that these idols violate core Christian beliefs. Through stories, he illuminates expressions of Christianity that confront Christian nationalism and offer a faithful path forward.
American Idolatry encourages further conversation about what Christian nationalism threatens, how to face it, and why it is vitally important to do so. It will help identify Christian nationalism and build a framework that makes sense of the relationship between faith and the current political and cultural context.

In a small Kentucky college town in 1953, two married women desperately fall in love with each other, until a moment of indiscretion threatens to destroy both their lives.
In her new adult novel, award-winning author Julia Watts creates a compelling, emotional queer tale of power and passion. Colleagues and neighbors of Samuel and Boots are more than willing to accept their married status, even though Samuel "dresses like a boy" and the pair's relationship is one of convenience that will never be consummated. But when Samuel meets a new professor's wife, Frances, at a faculty party, she soon falls in love, and learns the difficulty of discretion in a small town—with tragic consequences.
LAMBDA award-winning author Julia Watts (Needlework, Quiver) returns to adult fiction in this heartbreaking, yet hopeful novel. Highly recommended for fans of Lauren Groff, Rosie Walsh, and Alexandria Bellefleur.

Who were the jujitsuffragettes?
In the early twentieth century, women in England demanded the right to vote—and faced violent retaliation. Rather than back down, the suffragist group Women's Social and Political Union formed its own security unit. Edith Garrud, a pioneering self-defense instructor, trained them to fight back against abuse and arrest while pursuing long-overdue rights.
This graphic retelling of Garrud's life reveals the resilience and (often physical) resistance of her era's voting-rights activists. Featuring an introduction from Elsa Dorlin (Self-Defense: A Philosophy of Violence), The Bodyguard Unit explores an explosive stage of the fight for suffrage.

Cora Somerville is being hunted.
That much isn't new; the government has been after witches like her for decades, and ever since they took Cora's mother and brother, she's determined to help her coven smuggle witches to safe havens.
Then after a botched rescue, she runs into him. Theo. An old friend who'd almost been more, but vanished without a trace. To her shock, he's not just back in Los Angeles-he's now a witch hunter, and he's been assigned to bring her entire operation down.
As the fate of the two intertwine, Theo can't bring himself to turn Cora in, and Cora doesn't want to admit she needs Theo's help. Most of all, neither wants to face all the things they left unsaid a decade ago...
But with the rest of the witch hunters closing in, working together and rekindling the past might be the only way to survive.
"A rich, magical world hidden in the folds of Los Angeles among the fires and rubble of a modern witch hunt. With a complex cast of characters and an emotional core, West has woven an urban fantasy that's sure to enchant." — Sarina Dahlan author of The Four Cities Series

A whirlwind tour of San Francisco's fabled queer bohemia in the waning days of the 20th century, as the city's budget bon vivants work to save their eccentric lifestyles in the face of tech gentrification by LAMBDA award finalist Alvin Orloff.
Harris, San Francisco's most annoying gay barfly, doesn't mean to be bitchy, passive aggressive, or insulting. But he's so bedazzled by his own critical brilliance he feels morally obliged to share his scathing opinions with the world at any and every opportunity. This irritates no one more than his roommate, Maxine, an avant-garde transsexual cabaret singer. When she overhears him badmouthing her on the phone she flies into a rage and expels him from their apartment. This crisis couldn't come at a worse time. The year is 1999 and the "dot com" boom has rendered cheap housing nonexistent, and Harris, who works as a part-time telemarketer, is—as usual—low on funds. Will he be able to convince one of his eccentric, semi-dysfunctional friends with a rent-controlled apartment to let him move in?
Vulgarian Rhapsody immerses readers in a fading bohemia of queer dive bars, drag clubs, and countercultural cafes. The book's narrator (a longtime frenemy of Harris who's every bit as snarky and annoying as he is) tells the story with sadistic relish and an ironist's eye for the absurd. Anyone feeling sickly from too many uplifting stories of personal empowerment, precious coming-of-age tales, or sugarcoated romances will find the perfect antidote in this hilariously acidic comedy of manners.

In 1994, DEA Special Agent Michael Pevarnik opened an investigation with his informant, a Vietnamese refugee who infiltrated a string of drug-dealing auto repair shops in Worcester, Massachusetts. His yearlong case, Operation Tune-Up, solved murders in New York; chased a wily fugitive through Puerto Rico; went undercover with cocaine smugglers in Panama; and, most impactfully, exposed the biggest heroin traffickers the old mill town had ever seen.
When Worcester’s Main South neighborhood was given a voice as a crime victim nearly two years after the virtual elimination of heroin in New England’s second largest city—a phenomenon that reduced violent crime, stimulated business growth, increased property values, and improved the quality of life—it was the first time in US court history a community was allowed to give a victim-witness statement, declaring what they, not law enforcement, defined as a victory in the war on drugs.
A Peek Under the Hood is a true crime exposé of the case that freed an entire inner-city neighborhood from the perils and decay wrought by heroin trafficking.

Samuel was back. It seemed unfair to be blindsided. And in church no less. Shouldn't there be a commandment about that? Thou shalt not step foot inside thy ex's place of worship.
Julia Monroe has just turned forty and hopes this next decade goes much better than the last, in which she became a young widow raising two children on her own. With both her boys off to college, it's time for new beginnings, and she can finally focus on expanding her New Orleans-based cleaning business--but God has other plans. Samuel Reed, the ruggedly handsome Green Beret who broke her heart over twenty years ago, has returned to town and is the kind of distraction she never saw coming.
After their first interaction in years leaves her mind spinning and her emotions out of control, Julia knows she needs to keep her distance from him if she wants any chance of keeping history from repeating itself, but her meddling best friend has other plans to throw them together. It seems inevitable that Julia will have to face her past with Samuel, but only if she can work up the courage to embrace the kind of new beginning she never thought she'd see again.

Beginning with his autobiographical sketch, Memoir and Theatrical Career of Ira Aldridge, The African Roscius follows Aldridge's journey as a Black man who, "obtained and maintains among Europeans... a reputation whose acquisition demands the highest qualities of the mind and the noblest endowments of the person."
Making it a lifetime goal to use his success and influence to speak on the horrors of slavery in America and abroad; this memoir is addressed to what he hopes to be an enlighted reader, and details how he rose to fame as a Shakeperian actor in spite of the racism and prejudice he faced as a Black man in theater.
This edition also includes Aldridge's 1847 translation of Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois'sLe Docteur Noir (The Black Doctor). At the age of forty, Aldridge adapted the play about a hidden romance between a formerly enslaved doctor and the daughter of a French aristocrat and was said to have brought dignity to a role that traditionally ended in tragedy for its bi-racial lead.
Together, these two pieces paint a stunning portrait of one of the first great Black actors. One part memoir and one part translation, The African Roscius is an exceptional piece of Black history professionally typeset and reimagined for modern readers.

All she wanted was an apartment...
Amanda Jackson was used to toxic men. It's all she'd ever known. And this gorgeous blonde property manager, Connor Brooks, was a walking red flag. But she needed a place to stay, and this unit sounded amazing. She'd be crazy not to look at it.
For Connor, finding a mark was easy. A simple ad in the classifieds. Once they were inside, it was too late to escape. They had no way out. One look at their frightened eyes on the monitor, that's when the housebreaking could begin.
The second Connor closed the door, Amanda understood her situation. She was trapped and defenseless. Or was she? She has one card to play: make her captor fall for her before it was too late. All she wanted was an apartment. What she got was The Cage.
The Cage is the first book in a dark series by Danielle Bannister, author of Girl on Fire. Because The Cage is told in dual POVs you might be torn over if this book is a horror or a romance. Please be sure to read with care and check for tropes on the author's website.

From racing the family Oldsmobile in 1960 to winning the Winternationals in 1964, read about the meteoric rise of drag racing's greatest owner and tuner in the first-ever book about 'The Hawaiian' Roland Leong.
As the son of a Harvard graduate, it could have been difficult for Roland Leong to live up to his family's expectations. However, that wasn't the case. "The Hawaiian" knew at a young age that drag racing was his career path. His supportive mother, Teddy, saw potential in Roland and bought him a new 1962 Corvette for 'educational' purposes, such as wrenching and tuning. From there, it didn't take long for the world to discover Oahu's best-kept secret in drag racing. In 1964, less than two years after reaching the mainland, Roland was in victory lane at the Winternationals in Top Gas Eliminator. The following year, with Don Prudhomme behind the wheel, "The Hawaiian" immortalized his place in drag racing forever with wins in NHRA's Top Fuel Eliminator at Pomona (Winternationals) and Indy (US Nationals). Leong became the first ever to capture those iconic crowns in a single season. For good measure, Roland repeated the achievement in 1966 with Mike Snively, showing the world that a Harvard education isn't required to achieve greatness.
Roland Leong "The Hawaiian": Drag Racing's Iconic Top Fuel Owner and Tuner is a tale of family, friends, and forging a path that no other Chinese-Hawaiian before him had carved. Re-live his biggest wins and lasting friendships in this first-ever publication on drag racing's first builder and tuner superstar, Roland Leong!

Before punk, before the Beats, before existentialism, and beyond Surrealism there were two visionaries, two rebels, and two friends, Antonin Artaud and Robert Desnos.
It is 1926. Geoff Weidmann, a troubled young Austrian, is dragged by his elderly father from his lone farmhouse to Paris to live with Geoff's brother Franz and his French wife. Haunted by his troubled past and by his memories of the Great War, Geoff encounters in Paris a group of young men and women who likewise abhor war, mindless patriotism, and bourgeois conformity. Geoff meets the surrealist poets Antonin Artaud and Robert Desnos, original thinkers who are resisting both society's strictures and the pressure put on them by the founder of the surrealist movement, Andre Breton, to join the Community Party. Initially repulsed by Artaud, Geoff comes to admire this strange and troubled poet and easily befriends the jovial, irreverent Desnos. However, Geoff is haunted by a secret - had he been insane, or had he actually murdered a man and buried him on his Austrian farm?
Written to incorporate the imagery, concerns, and conflicts found in the works of Artaud and Desnos themselves, this novel is the first in a series of four dedicated to the lives and friendship of Antonin Artaud and Robert Desnos.

Lily Iona MacKenzie's unbounded zest for life sings through the poems in this collection. A writer in her bones and a dreamer in her heart, she discovers the poetry in everything—travel, art, music, nature, past and present-her words and rhythms touch the soul and leave their treasures behind.
"Listen closely to these poems’ quiet but insistent murmur. Lily Iona Mackenzie meditates on the textures of her California neighborhood as well as distant lands—Italy, Spain, Russia, Mali. Her poems lovingly embrace jazz, classical music, four paintings by Matisse, a grandfather’s voice, a 3-year-old niece. With concision and lucidity, she writes of bird nests destroyed by cutting nearby trees and how ‘Age cuts into us,’ and she ‘leans on form and shape/ to arrive at an understanding of’ desire, anxiety, time, the mysteries beneath the sea and, really, everywhere. Each poem offers surprising images and perceptions, and collectively they answer ‘The Artist’s Call’—to ‘capture these/ fleeting days/ on earth.’ What a gorgeous book!" —Kathleen McClung

Just when it seemed that nothing substantially new can be said or written about the first part of Genesis, In the Beginnings presents it in a dramatic new light. Through a close and careful reading of the first eleven chapters of Genesis, this book shows convincingly that hidden beneath the surface of the text, there is not one beginning, but rather two beginnings. Two accounts of creation are followed by two parallel narratives that reflect two distinct and at times competing world-views regarding the nature of God, of human beings, of our role in the world, of the relationship between the man and the woman, and much more.
Whether one accepts the traditional or the critical view of the Torah’s origins, In the Beginnings is a vivid and powerful testimony to the Torah’s depth, richness, and multivocality, with profound implications for the ways it is to be understood and lived in our day.

A Murderer on the Loose. A Detective Haunted by the Past. A Race Against Time.
DCI Jonathan Walker is a senior detective for the Lancashire Constabulary in North West England. He’s haunted by events of the past and hell bent on redemption, if he can stay healthy for long enough that is.
After a body turns up in the sleepy village of Rufford, Walker returns from his leave of absence early, his experience deemed crucial for the case. But when it transpires the crime may be linked to a decades old cold case involving the murder of his sister, the crime becomes personal. He needs this—for his wife and his kids, to make amends for past mistakes, and for the current victim—but he must toe the line if he isn’t to be thrown off the case.
When more people start to go missing and bodies turn up with the same bizarre signature, Walker and his team realise they have a serial killer on their hands. But time is running out if they want to save more people from dying, and one in particular, and Walker has to consider breaking the law himself to make things right, once and for all.
The Icehouse is the stunning debut police procedural crime thriller from J.J. Richards.

The summer before college Luca Piccone returns to Copper Cove, the idyllic campsite he and his closest friends have visited every year since they were kids. To Luca, Copper Cove is like the setting of the fantasy movies he loves, a sanctuary, protected from the dangers of the outside world, where nothing goes wrong and everything stays the same.
But this year things are changing.
Desperate to make this summer the best one yet, Luca tries to ignore the freshly torn rifts within his tight friend group, the pangs of unrequited love, the anxiety attacks he thought he’d left back at school, and the shadows at the edge of the forest threatening to break free. Until he learns the terrible truth.
Every generation the children of four families are bound by a pact. A pact designed to keep the camp pristine and the monstrous force lurking beneath the campsite imprisoned. But in order to do this, an unthinkable price must be paid—a price that has soaked the previous generations in blood. Can Luca keep his friends, and his favorite place, from being ripped apart?
By the end of the summer, only one thing is for certain: Copper Cove will never be the same again.

The title of this thematic commentary on the Torah, Torat Ahavah: Loving Torah, has a twofold message. First, “loving” can be read as a verb, reflecting my passion for Torah. In the words of the Psalmist, “How I love Your Torah, I meditate on it all day long” (Psalms 119:97). Second, “loving” can be seen as an adjective, reflecting what, for me, is the foundation of Torah. At its core, Torah is a book of love. Each letter expresses God’s infinite love for His people and for humankind.

Gabe's summer job scaring tourists with ghost stories turns terrifyingly real when he accidentally summons the spirit of a dead girl—and must join forces with her to protect the world of the living. A new story by award-winning author Ken Oppel for ages 10 and up.
The story of the tragic death of sixteen-year-old Rebecca Strand and her lighthouse keeper father is just an elaborate tale Gabe tells tourists for his summer job on Toronto Island. Or so he thought.
When his ghost tours awaken Rebecca's spirit, Gabe is drawn into a world far darker than any ghost story he's ever heard. Rebecca reveals that she and her father were connected to the Order, a secret society devoted to protecting the world from "the wakeful and wicked dead"—malevolent spirits like Viker, the ghost responsible for their deaths. But now the Order has disappeared and Viker is growing even stronger, and he'll stop at nothing to wreak chaos and destruction on the living.
Gabe and his friends—both living and dead—must find a way to stop Viker before they all become lost souls.

The Aliens Will Come to Georgia First showcases sixteen bizarre, hard-loving stories set in the foothills, pinelands, low country, and barrier islands of Georgia, and a few other places too. An angel is shot down and falls to the ground in the war between the armies of Heaven and the armies of Earth!
A young tribesman finds her lying damaged in the grass and knows she ought to be his enemy, since his people see themselves as being on the side of the Earth. But Ferren’s curiosity and pity outweigh every rule of his upbringing.
The setting is the far future, a thousand years after human scientists started to explore life after death, discovered Heaven and ended up waging war against the angels. Now the original human beings have been reduced to a degraded existence living in fearful, isolated tribes. Meanwhile, the so-called Humen who rule on Earth are preparing for their ultimate invasion of Heaven.
Ferren’s unique friendship with an angel will change the course of history. But first he must endure exile, learn the horrifying truth about what happens to those selected for ‘military service’, then help his tribe survive through the middle of a stupendous battle between the opposing armies.
This Young Adult Fantasy draws on the traditional lore of angelology – but without pushing a religious message, like C.S.Lewis, or an anti-religious message like Philip Pullman!

Putting God First: Jewish Humanism after Heidegger tackles the challenge of maintaining Jewish identity in a world dominated by Western humanism.
It argues that the Holocaust reflects more broadly on contemporary humanism than the Jewish world has ever dared to acknowledge. It advances the view that the establishment of the State of Israel presents a profound historical opportunity to disentangle Jewish thought from elements of the Western humanist tradition that threaten Jewish survival and conceal from view the plausibility of core Jewish ideas and values. The work proposes that a healthy and peaceful relationship between Westernism and a robust Jewish identity can be achieved only by unraveling the two, and it presents a philosophical path for achieving this.
Following a precise analysis of modern and postmodern thought that includes discussions of Immanuel Kant, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Ludwig Wittgenstein, George Steiner, Bruno Latour, Hannah Arendt, Jonathan Haidt, Daniel Kahneman, and others, the centerpiece of the book offers a close reading of the masterwork Being and Time, which Martin Heidegger composed in the period when his thought was gravitating toward his endorsement of Hitler and Nazism. This deep dive into Heidegger’s ontological understanding of how the individual (Dasein) interacts with others in space and time yields a method for articulating the onto-theological meanings of key Jewish concepts such as the Nefesh (psyche), the Neshamah (soul), Tzelem Elohim (human being in God’s image), Am Segulah, (Jewish chosenness), Shabbat, the Land of Israel, and more in texts such as the Tanya, the Sefat Emet, the Nefesh HaChayim, the Kedushat Levi, and in the writings of Rav Kook and the Maharal of Prague. Ultimately the book proposes a disentangled spiritual/political vision for a Jewish state that is characterized by the politics of Tikun Olam.

Being omniscient isn't all it's cracked up to be. For Eugene J. McGillicuddy, a private detective in Washington, D.C. in the twenty-second century, it's an outright curse.
Earth has finally joined galactic society — as an endangered planet under the supervision of the Galactic Congress. That's what happens when you nearly destroy your own planet though neglect. In many ways, the Earth has become the Casablanca of the Milky Way. Thousands of aliens arrive every day to visit, see the silly humans that almost blew up their world, and sometimes make a new home.
And sometimes, those aliens need a detective to find their missing wallet or six-limbed two-headed puppy dog on a bender playing pool and poker at the local speakeasy.
But even a psychic detective can bite off more than they can chew. Especially when that psychic detective wants to keep his gift a secret.
Soon after being offered a case from an ornery dinosaur diplomat, convergent evolution has a twisted sense of humor, and an alien ambassador with tusks, Jack McGillicuddy is kidnapped, tortured, and hunted across the galaxy by a myriad of aliens and intelligent machines the size of planets.
Fortunately, Jack has friends. Eddie, an accidentally created sentient computer program that became self-aware calculating body positions in an ergonomic office chair, and Alice Pemberton, legitimate super-genius whose hobbies are creating wormholes, come to Jack's aid when he needs it most.
Together, Jack and his allies must race through interdimensional cafeterias, stay one step ahead of a Galactic mystery, and somehow rescue themselves and maybe even the entire cosmos.

"Part road-trip novel, part fantasy epic, The Lioness and the Rat Queen is gritty and entertaining sequel that skillfully balances humor and drama as it tells a moving story about vengeance and forgiveness. Above all, it's the characters that bring the world alive-from our three complex and layered protagonists to the wonderfully flamboyant and sinister villain." — Aatif Rashid, author of Portrait of Sebastian Khan
"Noah Lemelson's The Lioness and the Rat Queen is a smart, unputdownable sequel set post-war where the "evil" empire wins, and the scrappy underdog rebels find themselves irrevocably tied to the person who defeated them. Its commentary on corporatism, imperialism, religion, and individualism strikes at the heart of characters who all have their own secrets. Nothing is sacred, and everything is bleak. Yet, with revenge on the horizon, hope springs." — AJ Super, author of Erebus Dawning
"This sweeping sequel to The Sightless City shows us that even with the revelations that shook our protagonists in book one, there is still more to question, more to fear, and more to fight for. The Lioness and the Rat Queen throws the doors of the world open wide, leading the reader on a blood-and-aether soaked quest right into the heart of the conflict that broke the world once, and may very well do it again. Marcel and Sylvaine must confront their own fears and failures if they are to catch the slippery Lazarus Roache and face the true monsters hiding in the shadow of his ego." — Casey E. Berger, author of The Resonance Saga

When Santa Claus enters a Texas bank just before Christmas in 1927, no one expects him to pull a gun.
The fake white beard hides his identity from his neighbors while he and three others take everything. But their easy heist goes sideways fast when armed lawmen and citizens assemble to claim a new reward for dead bank robbers.
Taking hostages, the gang forces a path through a frenzied and bloody shootout, setting the whole Lone Star state on their trail.
One bandit dies in the getaway. One is executed in the electric chair. One swings from a rope in a mob lynching. The last man finds a life he always hoped for--If only he can keep it.
Closely based on a true story, The Last Man is a gritty Prohibition-era crime novel filled with flawed characters and second chances.
"Goodman writes crisp, confident prose, giving us a novel as compelling as the incredible true story it's based on. The Last Man blends thrilling, cinematic set pieces with convincing character work that explores the nature of crime and rehabilitation. Fans of historical fiction should list Goodman among their 'must-buy' authors." (James Wade, two-time Spur Award-winning author of Beasts of the Earth)

Biting Thorns Off Roses is a transmutation of deep pain.
Through poetry, Hoffman strives to not only remove, but to also intimately examine the masks we all wear to hide from the world-and perhaps most importantly, the ones we wear to hide from ourselves.
Hoffman brings into question the ways in which we, as individuals and as a society, approach trauma. She shakes the very foundations of our judgements around mental health, challenging us all to walk through our own suffering with open minds and empathetic hearts.
A collection of work designed to thoughtfully carry readers on a journey, from hopelessness to hope. Biting Thorns Off Roses lyrically illustrates what pain has to teach those of us with the courage to sit still in the dark,
and listen.

Then Ben meets Sebastian Alucard, a reclusive billionaire and self-proclaimed vampire. Is he a recluse because he is a pain in the neck for most people or a sociopath with no self-reflection?
Finally, the mysterious and beautiful Sayida Mashallah, Lady Luck, batters Ben with sexual innuendo in some quest; what does she mean when she says that for heterosexual men, life is like a penis - women make it hard?

The battle for power is fierce in a world where mortals wield the strength of dead gods in this first book of a high-stakes epic fantasy series from Quinn Thomas.
A thousand years ago, the immortals were slain, their power passed down to a chosen few known as aspects. The competition between noble families for control of these aspects has plunged the land into a never-ending cycle of war and bloodshed.
The Tevulun family has been driven to the brink of extinction by the most recent war. When Tarana Tevulun, who possesses the abilities of Calamity, learns of her family's intention to murder her, she flees with the assistance of a band of mercenaries. The Tevulun’s enemy, the Ma’isans, take advantage of her absence to advance and besiege the capital city of Vicrum. Tarana returns to fight for the city, but faces a difficult challenge due to the involvement of the mortal aspect of Death – thought to be the sole remaining neutral aspect.
Meanwhile, a young soldier named Micol deserts the army after his first taste of battle. When he ends up in the besieged city of Vicrum, he finds himself embroiled with a group of outlaws. Thrust into a world of thieves and rebels, he must confront his deepest fears and make a decision that will change his life forever.
Death's Reckoning is a page-turning epic fantasy for fans of ensemble casts and character-driven plot twists, with echoes of Steven Erikson's Malazan series. Join these mortals as they wield god-like power in a world where even the noblest intentions can lead to destruction.

It’s world ruled by women. Men are all but extraneous and violent crime is almost eradicated. What could be better?
Severed Roots (recipient of a Literary Titan Gold Book Award) depicts a future where family, long considered a patriarchal construct, has finally been outlawed. Children are birthed by select female "manufacturers" and raised in Children's Centres, where girls are groomed for leadership and boys are taught subservience. Male adolescents willingly receive mandatory chemical injections to prevent sexual hunger--although some opt for gender reassignment surgery instead, which is laudable.
The goal? To prevent all forms of patriarchy and usher in an unprecedented age of world peace.
The result? A world ruled by women, where men are all but extraneous and violent crime is almost eradicated.
However, not everyone buys into this New World Order.
This is a domain of rallies, revolts, and self-immolation by women who suffer from being denied a chance at motherhood.
In the middle of the action is Nick Wong, a gentle, rule-following Canadian whose inquisitiveness and desire to do the right thing spur him on a perilous quest for Truth—about marriage, family and the need to connect with who we are.

Is saving your world worth sacrificing your love–and shattering your sanity?
My reality isn’t reliable. My world isn’t my own. The sensations zinging through my body and visions flashing through my mind—they are everyone’s emotions everywhere. Even everywhen. And I’m drowning in the onslaught.

But the world is drowning, too; unravelling under the pressure of a humanity that has lost its way. And when the scales tip into disaster, I find myself on the edge of a cliff. If I leap, I may be able to save us. But when I leap, I will feel everything, until everything is all there is—and there is nothing of me left.
Will I be able to remember our love if I can’t even remember myself?
The Song is life–but can our love survive its depths?

Personalities clash and relationships explode when Maggie is forced to choose between the man she’d hoped to marry and her dream of a career as a thoroughbred jockey. She learns the truth can be brutal, as she discovers some horsemen will do anything in pursuit of success, including using her as the means to an end. Still, there are others who want nothing but her affection.
A rodeo competitor and quarter horse jockey, Maggie grew up around quarter horses, as did her best friend, Johnny, a bronco rider who lives in California, and shares her passion for the rodeo. But when Maggie becomes involved with David, a thoroughbred owner and bloodstock agent, she is captivated by the high-strung racehorses and the excitement that surrounds David's association with them. David and Johnny are as different as the two breeds of horses. One is dependable and easygoing, while the other is unpredictable and headstrong. Maggie, however, is a combination of both. She's stubborn when she sets her mind on a goal, loyal to those she cares about, and determined to live her life her way. In order to follow her dream, Maggie leaves her home in New Jersey and travels to California. With Johnny's help, she finds a job with a trainer and starts racing his horses. But when David shows up, chaos follows, and she finds herself torn between the past and the present.
Although there are a few instances of the darker side of both racing and romance, the story is uplifting and ultimately makes the reader smile.

Brighton Academy student Larken Marche is sixteen years old and the only thing she wants to do is play lofting. As the most junior member on the varsity team, she has a real shot at making a career out of the team sport, and in 2201, Lofting is a great career choice.
Her best friend Molly Kostic is the kind of friend that both entertains and frustrates. Capable of telling the truth about half the time, when Molly decides that she likes Larken’s (fraternal) twin brother Oliver Marche, Larken doesn’t know whether to be happy for her or nervous about the possibility that Oliver will become just another proverbial notch in Molly’s belt.
When a strange boy, Elijah Grant, arrives at Brighton via transfer, he looks like a male copy of Larken, down to her nose and chin. Questions begin to circulate about Elijah’s origins and rumors fly about them being triplets instead of twins, or worse, that she, Oliver, and Elijah might all three be clones. Before they can put the rumors to rest, a man is killed in downtown Portland by someone who looks exactly like Oliver, leading to Oliver’s arrest. Larken and Molly work against the clock to rescue a brother Larken knows is innocent. Walking the line between two extremist factions, Larken and Oliver must fight for their right to exist.

In the first authoritative biography of Jackson Haines ever written, figure skating historian Ryan Stevens takes a deep dive into the fascinating story of The Father of Figure Skating.
The legend of The Skating King has been one of the most enduring stories in figure skating history.
Jackson Haines left America during the height of the Civil War and toured extensively through Europe. He translated ballet to the ice. He performed for Czars and Emperors. He inspired the formation of many of the world's oldest skating clubs. He changed the world's most exciting winter sport forever and our fascination with him has never waned.
In this meticulously researched biography, figure skating historian Ryan Stevens chronicles Jackson's story from his humble beginnings in New York to his premature death in Finland in 1875 - both on and off the ice. Through extensive study of 19th century archives and unpublished material housed at the K.H. Renlunds Museum and World Figure Skating Museum, Stevens proves that fact can be far more intriguing than fiction.
If you are a lover of figure skating, this book is a must read!

Six years after helping the Edison family defeat the designs of a malevolent meteor in Maniac Mansion, college student and classic nerd Bernard Bernoulli once again finds himself at the front door of the infamous mansion. With two weird friends, Hoagie and Laverne, Bernard must stop the evil Purple Tentacle from conquering the world—by freezing hamsters, pushing old ladies down the stairs, abusing Swiss bank accounts, and ever so slightly changing some of the most significant moments in American history.
Dave Grossman and Tim Schafer’s 1993 time-trotting point-and-click adventure game Day of the Tentacle brought LucasArts' game design to a new standard of excellence with smart puzzles, hilarious characters, and an animation style that harkened back to classic Warner Bros. cartoons. And somehow, they fit it all on a fat stack of floppy disks!
In this definitive oral history as told by the game’s designers, musicians, and artists, writer Bob Mackey tells the inside story of Day of the Tentacle’s lightning-in-a-bottle production, and reveals how two first-time directors boiled down the lessons of past adventure games into a tight and satisfying experience, how their team grappled with evolving technology to achieve the coveted status of "multimedia" at the dawn of the CD-ROM age, and how a remastered edition brought Tentacle to a new generation of fans.

Business Law Essentials You Always Wanted To Know is a simple yet comprehensive introduction to the laws that impact businesses in the US.
It is not advisable for a business founder or owner to be completely unaware of the implications of the legislation on their business and depend totally upon a lawyer to advise and guide them. Business owners must have a working knowledge of the law in their own country so that they can avoid trouble and adhere to the laws.
Business Law Essentials is a compact but handy guide for learning about business laws in the US. Whether you are a student on the verge of beginning your career, a new business owner, or an employee, this book will provide you with a deep understanding of the legal limits within which an organization should function and how an organization interacts with the regulators for the specific business sector.
Some notable features of this book are:
- Coverage of general laws such as contract laws to very specific laws such as securities laws
- Coverage of laws that are recently developing, such as laws relating to data protection
- Explanation of the rationale behind the laws and features of laws in simple, jargon-free language
- Questions at the end of each chapter to test your understanding of the chapter rather than your memory.
- Explanations against the backdrop of real-world scenarios and examples
This book will give you a head start into the field of business law and an ability to know where exactly to look, in the event an in-depth understanding of the laws is required.

Can we save ourselves in the future from our worst inclinations and survive?
Earth barely survived nuclear battles until the militaries of the world took over from authoritarians. But rebellion was agitating from within. Prosecutor Major Annalisa Farrell, Military Academy honors graduate, war hero, wounded warrior, and child abuse survivor fought to champion justice. An unexpected adversary turned out to be Judge Bennett McCrae, the “Judge Prince.” In his courtroom, the Military, and the general population, he was as popular as Annalisa was hated. Before appearing before Judge McCrae, Annalisa Farrell fought in numerous conflicts, was special ops, and had missions in space where she worked side by side with aliens.
As a “wild child of the tunnels” her extraordinary journey to a position of power was unparalleled. Adoption by General Farrell saved her life and gave her the loving family she never had and a mission as a daughter to be proud of. Suspected of being genetically engineered, unfounded prejudice followed her through the ranks. Though Annalisa learned to control her emotions better than most humans, even relaxed Military standards could not keep some relationships from disaster. Marriage contracts, casual sexual standards, and freedom to pursue multiple partners, could not totally eliminate human passions and obsessions.
An apocalyptic struggle for power and control from within threatened to destroy years of Earth peace and interrupt alliances with other planets, unless the traitors could be discovered and stopped. Aliens distrusted tumultuous human emotions. Answers had to be found before disaster occurred. Could heroic warriors save humans from their own self-destruction?
Content Warning: Please be aware this book includes descriptions of child sexual and physical abuse, military war violence, interpersonal violence, imagined injuries and violence, and death and destruction.

This collection of found poetry explores the mental health issues that surrounded one woman's experience of coming out as queer, and the subsequent struggles with both internal and external acceptance, medical interventions, sexuality, and the misuse of sex, drugs, and alcohol as coping mechanisms.
Found poetry is a type of poetry wherein the poet erases or blacks out (redacts) the bulk of the words on a page and the words that remain are used to create poetry; these remaining words appear in the poems in the same sequence as in the original text. The source document is an early draft version of the author's (as yet unpublished) novel. The images for most of the redactions are not included in this text. The erasure poems retain the original text spacing.

We've all heard the saying, "horses are a lot of work." But if dealing with your horse’s attitude is taking up all of your time, energy, and money, it might be time to take a closer look at what’s going on.
Author Meredith Hill has spent over 30 years observing and learning about horses in a variety of settings. From high-stress show barns to local rescues, she strives to achieve what she calls a "working relationship" of mutual respect with every horse she works with.
Sharing her experiences and heart-warming stories about her own horses, Hill provides readers with a wealth of information, including:
- How horses and their wild instincts evolved
- How to determine if a horse is misbehaving or not feeling well
- How to assess your horse’s behavior, including common behavioral issues
- How to read your horse’s body language and facial expressions
- How professionals can help us and our horses on the path to behaving well and demonstrating good manners
Whether you’re a new horse owner, a beginner to all things equine, or a seasoned equestrian who’s facing a new problem horse, Did I Really Mean to Buy a Horse? What to Do When Your Horse Is Acting Like a Monster, and When (and How) to Call for Help is the ultimate resource for understanding what your horse is trying to tell you. Communicating with a horse is learning a new language, as Ms. Hill points out, and learning to "speak horse" can take some patience and assistance.
Consider Did I Really Mean to Buy a Horse? What to Do When Your Horse Is Acting Like a Monster, and When (and How) to Call for Help if your horse has a bad reputation due to:
- Cribbing
- Weaving
- Kicking
- Biting
- Spooking
- Any of the endlessly creative bad habits horses can have
Combining Why Does My Horse Act Like This: Understanding Equine Behavior in Your New Horse and The Well-Mannered Horse: Developing an Ideal Equine Buddy, this book offers page after page of advice, words of wisdom, and patient encouragement from professional horsewoman Meredith Hill. You’ll also find a plethora of resources to help you:
- Find a trainer, veterinarian, farrier, or behaviorist to help you
- Make good decisions regarding your horse’s behavior
- Feel less intimidated and afraid of your horse’s attitude
- Understand why your horse may be acting up or being rude
- And ultimately, strengthen your relationship with your horse
Training horses isn’t for everyone, but Meredith Hill helps new riders and experienced equestrians alike learn more about their horse in Did I Really Mean to Buy a Horse? What to Do When Your Horse Is Acting Like a Monster, and When (and How) to Call for Help.

After rescuing The Lady Tsilania and restoring the crystal key to its rightful place, Marcus Beltram settled into life with his family and put all thoughts of Alkademah behind him. That was until his four-year-old daughter revealed that she could see gateways.
But these were not the silvery gateways Marcus was familiar with. Nor did they hum soothingly when Marcus listened for them. The gateways were now a roiling, dirty orange, like molten copper. And instead of the gentle hum he was accustomed to, they grated cruelly, like old machinery on the point of failure.
Worse still, as he watched, one disappeared, and then another. The gateways were dying. And possibly so was Alkademah.
Marcus knows he must try to reach Alkademah. How can he convince Dana that he has to return to a place that came close to claiming his sanity and his life?
With the gateways dying, if Marcus should reach Alkademah, will he be able to find his way home?
Find out in Return to Alkademah.

Summoned by the chief alderman of the German merchants in London, Christina agrees to take her ship to the Baltic to join a fleet bent on destroying the pirates infesting the waterways north of Lübeck, Christina's birthplace. In the end, her problems are compounded by the unexpected appearance of a person from her past, one whose very existence threatens to destroy Christina and the precarious life she has built for herself.

How to Feel Better… Realistically is a no-nonsense guide on how to feel better no matter what life throws at you.
The chief recommendation of the book is that we should be realistic. Other guides to happiness and feeling better have recommended techniques such as positive thinking, positive psychology, mindfulness, living in the present, chasing your dreams, and so on, but none of these work reliably over the long run. How to Feel Better… Realistically moves forward from these approaches to provide genuine, workable, practical answers to all of life's difficulties. No issue is shied away from. Nothing is left hidden. Everything is brought out into the open and fully answered.
Every issue of life is covered, including all the ineffective ways we may try to be happy, difficulties with other people, bad events happening in the world and our own lives, illness, accidents, mistakes, our own lack of abilities, ageing, and our mortality. Practical, realistic ways to feel better about each of these issues are completely explained.
The role the subconscious plays in our decisions and view of life is fully examined. Solutions are given on how to cooperatively lead our subconscious towards better feelings for us and itself.
How to Feel Better… Realistically also gives the best ways to deal with other people, including the difficult and the not-so-difficult "normal" ones. It explains why we spend so much of our time looking for what is bad and what we can do about this. It advises how we can understand and improve how we feel about the world's "unfixable" problems. Finally, it gives practical advice on when it is worthwhile to follow our dreams and the best way we can do it.
How to Feel Better… Realistically is entirely realistic in its approach. Its solutions work in all circumstances and keep working over the long run.
