Ostensibly a "cleaner", a person who disposes of bodies for criminals, Jonathan Quinn (not his real name) is more of a freelance intelligence operative with a core team of two. The books are fast-paced, complex and violent. There are conspiracies, betrayals and of course murder. Should be read in order.

Keye Street is a former FBI Profiler turned P.I. She is of Chinese descent and has a PhD in Developmental Psychology. The books feature tough cases, good action, lots of humor and a tinge of romance. Should be read in order. There probably won't be more since the author died in 2018. Darn.

Investigator Elmo Crumley is ostensibly the lead in this series of loosely-connected, highly autobiographical mystery novels. The real hero is the unnamed narrator who bears a heavy resemblance to Ray himself. This struggling writer gets involved in a series or weirder and weirder murders and assembles a cast of hangers-on only Bradbury could imagine. Surreal and dreamlike, the novels don't have to be taken in order, but it will help.

Part caper, part con, part espionage the Kidd novels are hard to categorize. Kidd is a computer whiz, painter, and professional criminal. LuEllen is his lover, and his favorite partner in crime. Because the books rely so heavily on technology, they have become dated rather quickly, but they’re still fun. Kidd also appears in a few of the Prey novels when Davenport needs something a bit shady done.

Intended to be straight-up crime fiction, the books veer off course at the end when the supernatural element becomes obvious. Uncle Steve just can't help himself. Hodges is a retired cop brought back into work by some unconventional partners in crime-solving. Long on violence and heart and should be read in order.

The books are products of their time, but are tightly plotted, have quirky characters and fantastic dialog.

As ADA for Sex Crimes in New York City, Alexandra works with homicide detectives Mercer Wallace and Mike Chapman to take down criminals. Somewhat formulaic, Alex is like a grown-up Nancy Drew, but the books are entertaining and each one serves up a dose of NY history as well. Best read in order.

Jack (no middle) Reacher is a former Army MP Major, but now he's a drifter who travels with the clothes he stands up in and his folding toothbrush. Never one to back down he follows his own moral code for justice. Not necessary to read in order, but have a strong stomach for violence and killing.
