Quant a miCarson McCullers (19 February 1917 - 29 September 1967), American author of novels, short stories, plays, poetry and essays. Born Lula Carson Smith in Columbus, Georgia, she moved to New York in 1934. In NYC she took night classes at Columbia University and NYU, and published her first work in 1936. The following year she married Reeves McCullers, and the couple settled in North Carolina, living in Charlotte and Fayetteville. Her first novel, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, was published in 1940.

Carson and Reeves divorced in 1941, and she returned to New York City, where she was a member of the February House commune. After World War II she lived in Paris, where she remarried Reeves in 1945; the couple stayed together until Reeves' suicide in 1953. McCullers, who suffered from rheumatic fever, a series of strokes, and alcoholism, survived until 1967.

McCullers' papers are now at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

Currently included here are books from the Carson McCullers library collection at the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin. Please note that some of the books cataloged as part of this collection appear to have belonged to McCullers' sister Margarita "Rita" G. Smith. it is not clear whether McCullers herself actually collected all the various translations of her own works, or the journals/periodicals featuring her publications.

Not included are books published after McCullers' death in 1967. Information on additional books from McCullers' library is always appreciated; please contact Jeremy Dibbell.
