About My Library

Because I finished my 50 book challenge early (should have done the 75 book challenge instead), I've started another challenge -- alphabetic authors. To follow along, see: LMHTWB's Alphabet Challenge -- Authors

For fiction, I tend to read the snobs-r-us literature, such as Salmon Rushdie, or Napoleonic naval novels, such as Alexander Kent, for pure relaxation. Lately, my brain has turned to mush and I'm reading cat cozy mysteries.

For nonfiction, my reading reflects my various hobbies/careers. I have plenty of math books (as I teach math), cat books (volunteer with cat rescue groups), cookbooks (love fine food and can't afford eating out everyday), and art books (how I supported myself before teaching).

My rating system is as follows:

5 stars -- excellent. I will read it again.
4 stars -- very good with some minor problems. For example, the problem may be with the character development (fiction) or with the some of the suggested materials (nonfiction). I'm glad I have the book and I will read again at some point.
3 stars -- good, but with more problems. As above, the book had flaws but in this case, the flaws were significant. While I'm glad I read it once, I probably won't read it again.
2 stars -- not good. I had major problems with the book, to the point that I considered putting it aside. While I read the entire book, I felt like it was a waste of time. I won't read it again.
1 star -- bad. I may not even finish the book and I will get rid of the book.
0.5 stars -- truly awful! I've only ran into 2 books like this, but they were books that I actively hated after only 2-3 pages.

Just to clarify, to me, getting rid of a book is akin to amputation.

About Me

I teach high school mathematics for a living, I read to learn, and I rescue Persian cats to save my spirit.

I have worked with rescue cats for ~20 years and have amassed quite a bit of knowledge, which I freely share with anyone who needs help. To that end, I have created a list Most Useful Books on Cats, which as the name says, is a list of books on cats and their care (health, psychology, and grooming). I also frequently blog about my cats at L.M. Hornberger, which has such a catchy title.
