My fiction reading leans heavily toward speculative genres: science fiction, horror, fantasy. Favorite authors include--to name just a few--H.P. Lovecraft, Jack Vance, Mervyn Peake, M. John Harrison, Michael Moorcock, and Walter Jon Williams.

I also read a lot of nonfiction, both as research for my day-job writing and for pleasure. Evolutionary biology, history of science, polar and Himalayan travel, and archaeology are some of my main nonfiction interests.

I'm a full-time freelance writer with more than 150 books published. Many of my books are nonfiction for kids and young adults--including a lot of books about exploration, science, and natural history.

My publication credits also include celebrity biographies, romance fiction, and a self-help book.

I grew up in the Midwest, went to graduate school in Philadelphia and spent some time there afterward, and now live in the Pacific Northwest.
