Quant a miI fell in love with book collecting when I was in high school and the University of Chattanooga merged with the University of Tennessee and sold all of its duplicate library books in a big bin at WOOLWORTHS(!) for $.23 each. Among my finds was an 1836 American copy of Dickens "A Pickwick Papers" and I was hooked.
I've been a journalist most of my career (Atlanta Constitution, Court TV, MSNBC.com, Associated Press, AOL's Patch) and taught journalism at Montclair State University in New Jersey before moving back to Chattanooga to help care for my mom. I spend a lot of spare time roaming around estate sales.
I'm a sucker for anything pre-1870, non-fiction, with engravings, particularly if it is in battered condition and costs $1. I have a particular weakness for bound volumes of old magazines (The Eclectic, Grahams, etc.), illustrations of machinery (1890 catalogue of medical devices, e.g.) and I started paying attention to illustrators I like after buying a copy of Rockwell Kent's N by E.
Best book: A 1650 copy of John Speed's History of Englande that I bought for $100 at an auction.
Quant a
la meva bibliotecaI have several hundred leather-bound volumes, complemented by several thousand hardbound books, largely history. I spend hours every weekend at estate sales and am always looking for interesting history books for $1.
I have about half of all of the Harpers Magazines from 1850 until about 1900 (when they switched from illustrations to photoengravings) plus another 3 dozen examples of other bound editions of magazines. 10-12 years of St. Nicholas, 5-6 of the original Life, 3 of Harpers for Children, 6 of Royal Geographic Society around 1860, and a fair collection of travel and exploration (the U.S. Navy voyages to Chile, Japan, the Amazon, Jordan; Stephens Travels in Central America; Layard's Ninevah). Decent examples of classical texts including Josephus, a 50-volume set of classical authors from the 1840s, Washington Irving complete from the 1850s, Wm. Prescott complete, 6-8 old dictionaries. But my tastes are eclectic. One favorite is a 1943 "Wortebuch" in German for travelers in the Third Reich listing about 1,000 words, with illustrations Duden-style, in 23 languages, the languages of the country's the Wehrmacht had just finished occupying.
